It's one thing to say sorry, it's another thing to be truly sorry. However it may be, I think the word sorry can really change the world, a lot of things can be avoided if someone decides to just say I am sorry, and in my opinion, you don't have to be wrong to say I am sorry, sometimes you just say the words for peace to reign.
Growing up, I watched my mum say the words all the time, and each time she meant it, most of the time, she wasn't wrong. But here I was still finding it hard to say sorry, my mum would often get angry, according to her, I can't take a correction if I can't say sorry. When I entered the higher institution, I was so desperate to leave home that when I finally left home my parents begged me to come back home, I was already moving with a bad peer group who advised me to show my parents I am an adult thus can do whatever I wanted. I took their advice and spoke rudely to my mum. I thought I was being a man for a second, but after hearing my mum say the word; "Am I that bad for telling my son to come home?" It was at that moment I knew I had messed up because I wasn't sounding like myself.
I took the next available flight back to Warri from Lagos and went back home, and the only thing that came out of my mouth was I'm sorry.

That was when I began to learn the importance of saying sorry and I started saying sorry even for things I didn't do, just so peace would reign. There was a period my boss was always having issues with me at the office, and most of the time they were things that didn't really concern me. One particular time, he took it to the extreme, blaming me for not preparing the template of a design he specifically told me to forget about, I simply apologized and offered to work on a new template I already made. He looked at me as though he was expecting me to argue about it with him, and kept quiet afterward. A few days later he threw me a surprise birthday party and one of the things he mentioned was how I always shocked him by not getting into an unnecessary argument.

I have learned so far that saying I'm sorry doesn't make me weak even when I am right, it only shows I want peace, and I'm mature enough to take on responsibility whether or not it's my responsibility to bear it. Sometimes saying I'm sorry also makes the person who is wrong accept they are wrong because there are quarrels and fight that can be avoided if one person desires to avoid them by swallowing pride to say sorry. Having self-esteem is good, but not at the expense of peace, we should know when to let peace reign.
