Charity can be a trap and also can be help especially when you become desperate and it seems like there is no way out. The person helping you would seem like a savior at one point, but if you are not careful you might just be inviting disaster into your life and creating more problems for yourself. I know this because it has happened to me on different occasions and I have realized that life sometimes throws battles only God can truly save us from. But then again, we need to be careful about the kind of charity we receive and not be people who would invite danger into our lives or throw away help out of fear. The motive for help must always be questioned, it is very important to ask questions so we do not invite people who will give us shovels instead of ropes when we are in a hole.

My dad used to be very wealthy, and when he went into trouble he had friends who decided to lend him money and use his properties as collateral. A lot of them ended up taking the properties before he could even gather the money to pay back. At the end of the day they were only after his properties. The one that shook us was one who collected our duplex for a loan of 2,000,000 naira. A duplex worth at least 150,000,000. And my dad could not fight because he realized the trap too late. Even when my family became homeless the people who decided to help didn’t want to help but wanted to show their generosity outside while looking to enslave us inside with the knowledge that we had no place to go to.One time I was indebted and my MD offered to help, because of my past experiences I only accepted the help my salary could cover so I do not end up being indebted to him for life. He saw right through me and did not protest.
I decided to do some free jobs for him as payment for the money he gave me because I understand that nothing is truly free even in freetown. If I give help to someone, I would need at least a thank you if I choose to be very generous. Gratitude is a form of payment also, so at the end of the day nothing is truly free and we must all pay for charity someway or somehow, it might not be exactly of we gave the help, but the person that helped you today might call in a favour tomorrow, and if that favour goes against your values, you might be forced to compromise. But then there is something even more striking. At the end of the day, even if the person giving to you has the most sincere heart, if you choose to be good you might be compelled by your morals to do something to repay the kindness. This is just how the world works.
