I was pacing the other day in front of my office / studio window looking at the traffic thinking about what to sketch next and this caught my eye 馃槤
So the plan then was to sketch a little hot hatch with a festive pinata on top, but which car ?
I settled on an Audi A1, they are somehow common here in Mexico City and a novelty coming from the states, land of of the big car.
When making very complex illustrations I like to cheat a lttle by making a mock up of the scene in 3D as an underlay, luckiliy we live in an age where there are plenty of 3D models available I found this one online and imported it, I also made the pinata in Rhino:
While you can trace a wireframe, I like to figure out where the light is coming from and apply a nice texture to make tracing easier, I particularly like a texture from zBrush, here's the resulting reference underlay:
Now for the line work, I use manga studio and a regular wacom tablet, instead of just tracing the models, I usually add and modify details at this stage, like the wheels, spolier and other small details, it's a lot of fun.
Rendering comes next, basically a ton of layers blocking in dark medium and light colors:
I also added a Party Parrot since it was one of my favorite memes of the year and here you go a final print !
One of the cool things about working with layers is that you can change colors pretty easily, here's a warholesque set with different colors:
I hope you enjoyed this little sketch process and do let me know in the comments if you want to see any other more basic tutorials or subjects.
Thanks and Happy holidays !
