I drove into the school premises like a mad woman. The gateman stared after me with his mouth agape. Lucky me, the traffic lights turned green at every stop as I drove straight down to my son's school. I was more than two hours late in picking him up.
My heart racing fast and in fear, I slammed the car door shut and ran towards his class. Please, please, Alex! Be here! I prayed silently in my heart.
As I approached my son's class, his teacher, Ms Amber, met me at the door. She had a worried look on her face that made me almost burst into tears. "Mrs. Markson! You are very late! I ..."
I quickly interrupted her. "I know! I am so sorry. I was very busy and time got away from me, I did not realize…" Now she interrupted me.
"Madam, we can't find Alex. We have been searching…"
I moved so close to her that I could smell her floral cologne. "What do you mean you can't find my son?!" I whispered harshly. At this point, I did not care for social space or decorum. I would die if anything happened to my boy. What would I tell his father?
Ms Amber's eyes widened in shock at my demeanor. She stepped back a little. "I'm sorry, madam. He was here when all his classmates were picked up and before I could turn back, he was gone. I could not find him anywhere. Our security team is on it…"
"Oh God!" I whimpered, leaned on the wall of the classroom and slid down to sit on the clean cork floor. I did not care anymore.
"Please Mrs. Markson, pull yourself together. Your son will soon be found. He could not have gone far and…" I mentally tuned out her voice.
Then I heard that glorious, thin voice of my six year old son.
"MOMMY!"
I could see Alex Markson waving and running haphazardly from the direction of the school library, his school bag seemed to slow him down. I jumped on my feet and closed the distance between us. I held my son under his arms, raised him up and hugged him tightly.
"Mommy, I waited and waited." Alex said. I blinked back the tears that had pooled in my eyes at his sight. I don't know what I would do if anything happened to him because I was too busy working.
"I'm sorry, Sweets. I'm here now. Let's go home."
