“Christabel, what did you do to James? He seems angry,” her mother asked.
Christabel looked at her mother but did not seem bothered by the question. She remained quiet for a moment, as though she did not understand why her mother was concerned.
Her mother asked again, this time more firmly. “Christabel, I am talking to you. What happened between you and James?”
Christabel sighed before answering. “I introduced him to my best friend, Julie. They started dating, and a few weeks into the relationship, he broke up with her. When I found out that he broke up with Julie because of a new girl he had met at school, I told him it was his loss. I honestly do not understand why he is angry with me. What does he expect me to do? Take his side simply because he is my brother?”
Her mother listened carefully without interrupting.
For a few moments, the room was quiet. Her mother took a deep breath and walked toward James’s room.
She knocked gently on his door before entering.
James was sitting on his bed, looking upset. His mother sat beside him and spoke calmly.
“James, I can see that you are angry, but I want you to understand something. Relationships are not games, and people’s feelings should never be treated carelessly. If you choose to be with someone, you owe that person honesty, respect, and consideration.”
James lowered his head. He knew exactly what she was referring to.
“I am not saying this because I want to take Julie’s side against you,” his mother said. “I am saying it because I want you to learn from what happened. One day, you may be in a serious relationship, and you will need to understand how your actions affect the person you are with. Treat every woman you date with the same respect you would expect someone to show your sister.”
