I’m not much of a writer but sometimes I scribble stuff down . Today was one of such. What inspires me???? You won’t believe it !! Boredom is my inspiration. This is particular story actually happened some years ago and I still remember it like it was yesterday.......
I had just passed one of the hurdles in my medical school, I had made it into my second year . Looking back at it now , that was an easy exam but we were made to believe it was an exam that half of the class was going to fail. My parents as you can imagine we’re pleased with the news . As I returned to school my dad gave me his mifi (loaded with 24gigabites of data). It was a gift and I loved it. Non Nigerians might not understand what 24 gig is over here 😅😅 . These telecom networks make us pay through our noses for data over here . One week into my return to school, I was returning to my apartment after a stressful day when it started raining. I tried to make a run for it but the rain got heavier . I decided to seek shelter in a make shift restaurant beside the road ( we call them bukas here). As I was crossing the gutter which separated the ‘buka’ from the road my mifi fell out of my breast pocket into the gutter with fast flowing water. Panic set in immediately, I couldn’t bear the thought of telling my dad I had misplaced his mifi in just one week. I dropped my bag in the restaurant, took off my shoes and start searching for it . The intensity of the rain increased, I was soaked but I didn’t care . Thinking back now , I don’t think I even felt the raindrops hit my back as I bent down to search for it . I was knee and elbow deep in filthy sewage water . Someone saw me and asked what I was looking for, I explained to him and he joined me in my search, then another joined and another and another soon we were six in number . I gave up after fifteen minutes or so. I assumed the fast flowing current had taken it down the drain. I thanked everyone that helped me look and continued my walk to my house . I turned back and saw two boys still searching. I felt bad for them because of what they had passed through because of me, I wanted to tell them again to stop looking but I realized I couldn’t muster the strength to yell. As I turned once again to continue my journey home, I heard a sharp scream . They had found it !!!! and a girl that was watching the whole episode screamed out of excitement. I ran back, thanked all of them and took out the battery. It’s customary to show appreciation with a little money when things like this happen but I was broke at the time . I got home and had a warm bath and as I did I wondered if I would have stopped to help a stranger look for something under the rain. I knew the answer immediately! I wouldn’t have ! and I felt ashamed of myself. I was thankful, thankful for kind people like those guys that helped me, and thankful for good people , people that make you want to become a better person.
