The best donuts at Bangrak Bazaar, โดนัทที่อร่อยที่สุดที่ตลาดบางรัก
Bangrak Bazaar is a small market next to the Robinson mall on New Road in Bangrak district of Bangkok. The quickest way to get there is by taking the skytrain to Taksin Bridge station. This bazaar is to the left of the station, a few minutes walk away from one of the best street food venues in Bangkok.
I have been here several times but I have sadly taken familiar things for granted and missed out on the best donuts I have ever encountered in Bangkok. I just couldn’t believe that I had been walking past this small and humble donut stall for ages. I never took photos of this stall before as my previous experiences with several kinds of donuts were very disappointing: most donuts were too heavy in texture, too sweet and made with margarine or re-processed vegetable oil. So, these cheap donuts were made in big sizes with sweetened glaze to attract customers.
One evening I started to notice many customers on motorbikes stopping by this plain looking donut stall and there were several regular customers stopped by the stall. This had to be investigated; I wondered why this vendor could make money from selling mini-size donuts! Most people would go for much bigger size donuts with chocolate or icing on top. So, I approached this donut stall and asked about the prices and ingredients of these small donuts. To my surprise, the vendor has been selling donuts with her Chinese parents since fifty-five years ago. It was her immigrant Chinese father who started the business to make money for his family. They have been selling home made donuts since 1965 and her ancestors have been living in this area for three generations.
I was very impressed by the donut lady who offered donuts for free tasting. I did tell her I never liked donuts before as I could smell the cheap cooking oil and taste the second grade flour used in making cheap donuts. After tasting the donut, I started asking her all sorts of questions as I really liked this donut. She told me that she used all top quality flour and real butter; the cooking oil is an expensive brand which was never reused again. She told me that she only made limited quantity of donuts per day so customers would always enjoy freshly made donuts.
Occasionally the vendor made some deep-fried stuffed Taro which would normally be found in Chinese restaurants serving dim sum. These are my all time favourite snacks.
No wonder, I have become her regular customer after buying one small bag of donuts. They still tasted very good after two days in the fridge. So, I persuaded my old friend to visit this donut stall with me in a few days. At first, she was quite reluctant about street stall and cheap donuts; but after tasting a few free donuts, my friend bought five bags for distributing to people at her apartment. We each got a bag of donuts to accompany our fresh brewed coffee. We were so lucky to discovered a lovely little coffee shop hidden away in the corner of the bazaar. My goodness! We could hardly believed we could have such wonderful coffee at half the normal prices in shopping mall. Bangrak Bazaar is truly full of hidden gems of eateries which I have taken for granted for such a long time. Please be sure to drop by this place when you have the opportunity to visit Bangkok. People here are very friendly and helpful as they are mostly locals whose families have been living here for over eighty years. The old Bangrak village must have been such a nice place in the good old days!
เมื่อเดือนก่อนเราพึ่งรู้ว่าแถวตลาดบางรัก มีร้านขายโดนัทที่อร่อยที่สุดในกรุงเทพ เรานี่ไม่น่าตาถั่วมองข้ามร้านรถเข็นเล็กๆที่ขายโดนัทชิ้นจิ๋วไปเลย นี่เป็นเพราะเรามีประสบการณ์เกี่ยวกับโดนัทที่ไม่ค่อยดี โดนัทส่วนใหญ่ที่เราเจอมักจะมีชิ้นขนาดใหญ่ มีน้ำตาลฉาบหรือมีช็อคโกแล็ตเคลือบอยู่โดยรอบ พวกนี้จะมีรสชาติหวานมากอย่างเดียว แต่เราจะสามารถได้กลิ่นเนยเทียมและนํ้ามันที่เก่าๆออกมาจากโดนัท ส่วนเนื้อแป้งก็จะหยาบและแข็ง พอกัดก็จะร่วนเหมือนเม็ดทราย กินแล้วติดคอ เรามักคายทิ้งเพราะทนกลิ่นนํ้ามันที่เขาเอามาใช้ทอดซํ้าหลายรอบไม่ได้ เราเลยเมินโดนัทมาหลายปี จนกระทั่งเย็นวันหนึ่ง เราสังเกตเห็นคนขี่มอเตอร์ไซค์มาจอดซื้อโดนัทที่ร้านนี้หลายคันมาก แล้วคนเดินถนนก็ตรงมาซื้อโดนัทเหมือนเป็นลูกค้าประจำ เราจึงต้องเข้าไปสำรวจว่าร้านนี้มีอะไรดีหนอ
จากการสำรวจเราพบว่า ร้านนี้ขายโดนัทมานานกว่าก้าสิบห้าปี ตั้งแต่ปี 2508 โดยพ่อแม่เป็นคนต้นคิดว่าจะขายขนมโดนัท หญิงสาวที่เป็นลูกก็ช่วยพ่อแม่ทำโดนัทขายตั้งแต่เป็นเด็ก แต่ละวันเขาจะทำขนมมาขายจำนวนจำกัด เพื่อให้ลูกค้าได้กินโดนัทที่สดอร่อยทุกวัน พอเราได้ชิมอันแรก เราก็แปลกใจมากว่าโดนัทที่นี่อร่อยมากแบบไม่น่าเชื่อ เราก็ถามเขามากมาย จนเรารู้ว่าคนขายคนนี้ใช้ส่วนประกอบที่เป็นของดีมีคุณภาพ เขาใช้เนยแท้ในการทำขนม ไม่ได้ใส่นมผงหรือเนยเทียม หรือนํ้ามันพืชถูกๆเหมือนทั่วไป เวลาทอดก็ใช้น้ำมันพืชอย่างดีและไม่ได้นำกลับมาใช้ทอดขนมอีก ต้นทุนค่อนข้างสูง แต่เขาไม่มีรายจ่ายด้านค่าเช่าร้านแพงๆ และทำทุกอย่างเอง เจาจึงยังขายได้ในราคาถูก ร้านนี้มีลูกค้าประจำเยอะมาก คนที่กินโดนัทร้านนี้แล้วไปกินที่ร้านอื่นก็ต้องกลับมาซื้อที่นี่อีก
เราก็เลยกลายเป็นคนชอบโดนัทขึ้นมาทันที อีกสามวันต่อมา เราก็ชวนเพื่อนรุ่นพี่มาซื้อโดนัทที่นี่ ตอนแรกเขาก็ลังเลเพราะโดนัทเป็นอะไรที่ธรรมดามาก แต่พอได้ขิมเท่านั้น เขาซื้อทีเดียวห้าถุงเพื่อเอาไปแจกคนแถวบ้านก่อนปีใหม่ แถมยังบอกว่าจะสั่งซื้ออีกเพื่อเอาไปแจกคนช่วงปีใหม่ ส่วนเราก็ซื้อกันคนละถุงเพื่อไปนั่งกินกับกาแฟแถวนั้น ก็โชคดีอีกที่เราไปเจอร้านกาแฟเล็กๆน่านั่งที่แอบอยู่ในตลาดนั้น กาแฟยอดจะอร่อยและราคาถูกกว่าในห้างมาก วันนั้นเป็นวันที่กินกาแฟกับโดนัทอย่างมีความสุข เราไม่น่ามองข้ามร้านเล็กๆธรรมดาไปเลยนะ ตลาดแห่งนี้ยังมีของกินอร่อยที่มีคุณภาพอีกหลายอย่าง เราคงต้องหาเวลามาชิมอาหารที่นี่ในอนาคต
