His voice was as an opera singer's. An unlearned opera singer. Screeching out into the night with none of the grace, dignity, or harmony that one would otherwise expect from a singer of the fine arts.
I buried my face into my hands and hid my burgeoning tears.
That's because it wasn't an opera singer. It was something far worse.
"Quiet," I mouthed, willing my whisper to be heard through several walls and doors. "Please, I beg of you. Quiet. Silence. Sweet silence."
It wasn't to be.
The voice was no longer akin to a wannabe opera singer but was closer to that of a wailing banshee, or a sea siren! However, this siren would not be attracting gullible sailors into its frightful lair. No. This one would be scaring them away with the police-siren squeal that emanated from its gaping mouth.
The siren-banshee's cry strengthened, trying to lure me out of my hiding spot with its false cries.
I would not succumb.
I would not fall for its trickery.
It's cry transformed into a vibrant scream that demanded it be heard. I bit my lip and shuffled deeper into the wardrobe, throwing a dusty old blanket over my head to muffle the horrid sound.
It did not work. If anything the wail seemed louder, shriller, and filled with anger and desperation as it stood offended by my attempts to thwart its will.
"Mum!" he shrieked, louder than ever. "I farted really good! MUM! Come here! Have a sniff!"
Hullooo ~ it's Day 892 of @mariannewest's five-minute #freewrite challenge. The prompt for today was -- opera singer -- and this semi-non-fictional thing is what resulted before the eggtimer website beeped at me.
I'm not coping being locked inside with a strong-willed six year old. My sanity is at the end of it's rope, located somewhere at My Wit's End, and I don't think I'll be able to find it again. 😔 When this is all over, I'm taking a holiday. Alone. Just me, myself, and my laptop. For a whole week. Maybe two.
Isolationnnnnnn.
