"What's wrong, Jenny?"
Jenny shrieked and whipped around, and almost tripped over her own feet as she came face-to-face with Joey, her housemate. Literally face-to-face. Barely an inch away face-to-face.
"Where the hell did you come from?" She stepped back to get some space between them then wrinkled her nose as a fishy scent assaulted her. "And why do you smell like fish?"
"Prawns, Jenny." He shrugged. "Breakfast."
"Of course." Jenny's arms slumped against her sides and she lowered her head in mock sadness. "This is what's wrong, Joey. You have prawns for breakfast, you had prawns for breakfast, and all I want is to get some breakfast muffins into my belly."
"Why can't you?"
Was he serious? Jenny raised an incredulous eyebrow and waved at the traffic.
"I can't get breakfast muffins because, as you can see, it's hard to get by right now."
Joey threw his head back and laughed.
"Oh, is that all? That's not a problem. Not a problem at all!"
"What are you talking about? Look at that traffic! I clearly can't get by. No one can get by. There is no way I can get to the bakery with the traffic like this. No one is even following the road rules. I'm surprised they're not driving on the damned footpaths!"
HONK!
"Out of the way!"
Both Joey and Jenny leapt aside as a grizzled old lady on a mobility scooter zoomed past them so fast the wheels threatened to fall off, and watched as she vanished into the wild vehicular fray, her frazzled white hair as a ribbon behind her as she expertly weaved in between cars and emerged free on the other side.
"Maybe I should've asked her to get me some muffins," Jenny muttered.
"Clearly you need your own mobility scooter." Joey winked.
Hullo! It's day 1476 of @mariannewest's five minute #freewite challenge, and the prompt for today is -- it's hard to get by.
This is a continuation from:
"Morning Traffic."
If you're interested, the following is what I actually wrote in five minutes before spending ten or so minutes tidying it up a bit and expanding upon it:
Because tomorrow is the weekend freewrite, we'll have to wait for the day after to continue this little Joey and Jenny story.
See you then!! 😊
