No recuerdo la última vez que me subí a un juego mecánico y tampoco la última vez que me subí en un gusanito.

A dos días para el último día del mes pasado, mi familia y yo visitamos una feria que se instaló en el pueblo donde vivo, quise llevar a mi bebé para que se montara conmigo en un par de juegos y se divirtiera, ya saben, algo distinto al día a día común.

I can't remember the last time I rode a carnival ride, or the last time I rode a bumper car.

Two days before the end of last month, my family and I visited a carnival that had set up in the town where I live. I wanted to take my baby so he could ride a couple of rides with me and have some fun—you know, something different from the usual daily routine.

Ella, muy observadora como muchos bebés de esta generación, no paraba de ver todas las luces y los dibujos, se veía bastante entretenida y más cuando nos subimos al primer juego, era un trencito de 3 vagones muy coloridos.

She, very observant like many babies of this generation, couldn’t stop looking at all the lights and pictures; she seemed quite entertained, especially when we got on the first ride—a very colorful little train with three cars.

Todo estaba saliendo bajo control hasta que decidí subirme al gusanito, que no es más que una pequeña montaña rusa con la cara y el cuerpo de un gusano, ideal para niños pequeño y madres que llevan a sus bebés... o eso creía.

Everything was going smoothly until I decided to get on the “little worm,” which is basically a small roller coaster shaped like a worm—perfect for small children and moms with their babies… or so I thought.

Resulta que lo subestimé, puesto que al momento del descenso inicial ese pequeño gusano fue muchísimo más rápido de lo que esperaba, sobretodo cuando estaba por completar la vuelta y llegar a la parada, que es cuando atraviesa una curva inclinada y se impulsa para comenzar nuevamente, justo en ese instante sentía que el mecanismo iba a fallar y se iba a despegar del riel, ademas que estaba considerablemente alto.

It turns out I underestimated it, because during the initial descent that little ride was much faster than I expected—especially as it was about to complete the loop and reach the stop, which is when it goes through a banked curve and accelerates to start over. Right at that moment, I felt like the mechanism was going to fail and it was going to come off the track, Besides, it was quite high.

Me sobresalté y por ende también mi hija; pensé en bajarme pronto termino la primera vuelta pero solté el teléfono, la abracé con ambos brazos y trate de brindarle toda la comodidad para que lo disfrutara.

I jumped, and so did my daughter; I thought about getting off—the first lap was almost over—but I put down my phone, hugged her with both arms, and tried to make her as comfortable as possible so she could enjoy it.

Mi idea al principio era grabar todo, incluída la reacción de mi bebé pero su inquietud y sobretodo la velocidad y el movimiento del gusanito me obligaron a dejar de grabar una vez completada la primera vuelta. No estoy segura de cuántas fueron en total pero si recuerdo que justo en la última vuelta mi hija se rió y pareció disfrutarla. Ella al menos se divirtió en la última, yo me las pasé todas sosteniendome fuerte y esperando a que terminara ya.

My original plan was to record everything, including my baby’s reaction, but her restlessness—and especially the speed and movement of the little worm—forced me to stop recording once the first lap was over. I’m not sure how many laps there were in total, but I do remember that right on the last lap, my daughter laughed and seemed to enjoy it. At least she had fun on the last one; as for me, I spent the whole time holding on tight and waiting for it to be over already.
