The wild hogs that destroyed the yard, and led to the creation of this impromptu garden, returned with fantastic timing! Not all was lost, however. We did harvest several melons.
The hogs showed up when some of the earliest fruits had just begun ripening. We went ahead and harvested some of the bigger melons, even though they were not yet fully ripe, so we could sample the fruit in case the hogs returned for a third time.

Needless to say, the results were not as good as expected, but the silver lining here were the numerous valuable lessons acquired in the process. Judging by the results of this experimental garden, melons really need to be on a trellis and any garden should be protected with a fence or some kind of barrier to keep out destructive animals.
