Hola amigos.

Hello friends. When I read emiliorios@emiliorios' post about uncomfortable truths I felt identified with some of the proposals he made. For that reason I assume them and try to expose them from my experience.

Specifically, I want to talk about three of them. Three uncomfortable truths that are related to each other. I must say that now I realize the uncomfortable experiences that they generated in me and some of their effects on me. But it was not until some time ago that I understood the need to become aware of them if we want to develop as human beings.

What are these truths? Conformity with our current situation - avoidance of uncomfortable situations - believing that academicism will solve all our problems. Notice that I connect them with -. For me they are closely related.

Let's start with the last one? I grew up in a family of professionals, teachers specifically. Study was always instilled in me as an important habit to achieve great things in life. Professionally, I have my father and one of my uncles as role models.

They are both Doctors of Education Sciences and I have had the added privilege that in addition to being co-workers at my university, they have also been my formal professors in graduate courses, and in their profession I would dare to say that they have earned prestige at the national level.

They are my professional role models. They have encouraged me in the studies I have done and continue to do. However, at times I felt frustrated. In spite of obtaining very good results in my studies and professional life, many times I collided and still collide with a crude reality: people who do not have the preparation in those academic results that I have achieved surpass me in economic income.

I do not intend to make catharsis here, I try to illustrate my experience. For a long time this caused me uncomfortable experiences, such as frustration. Luckily, psychology, my eternal girlfriend, came to my aid.

While I was preparing a lecture for my students on the different types of intelligence, I understood the reality I was living in. My situation, which, needless to say, was not as bad as I made it out to be, I had brought it on myself.

I have close friends who barely finished high school. However, they developed skills in other areas in which I never dared. For example: in business. So, who is smarter?

Undoubtedly, we both are, but intelligence is a capacity and it is developed in a certain activity. I realized then that I was either in the wrong profession or I had to change some of my beliefs.

I also realized that I had not made some efforts that those "uneducated" friends had made. I had preferred to stay in my comfort zone, self-justifying my decisions.

This brings me to another uncomfortable truth: self-conformism, which has at its base, in my opinion, our insecurities. If not, why not start a new path into the unknown that can bring you very good things?

It happened that moving from the known to the unknown caused me uncertainty. I would have to develop new skills to face situations for which I was not prepared. Why face that discomfort if in my profession I enjoyed a certain prestige and validation from my colleagues?

It was more comfortable for me to blame someone else for my frustrations, the State for example. Ultimately, it is responsible for ensuring the proper functioning of society. A society in which professionals are socially validated with recognition.

Yo no entendía.

However, there is a much cruder truth that I did not dare to accept. Those who did not study but have developed skills that allow them to achieve results in other fields, have personality qualities that I had not managed to incorporate.

They face uncertainty on a daily basis, they are not afraid of it, they accept change with flexibility and try not only to adapt but to create the conditions to achieve their goals. It was like a click. At that moment I decided to focus on the things I needed to improve in order to achieve my goals.

In a way I have already told you about the third uncomfortable truth. I didn't step out of my comfort zone because I felt validated by my academic results.

There's nothing wrong with that, in my opinion. It's just that life is dynamic, changing. Nature is constantly evolving and only those who are able to cope with change evolve along with life. If you don't believe me, consult Charles Darwin's Theory of the Evolution of Species.

I had limiting beliefs about what was appropriate for a professional to do for a living. Stereotypes assimilated from society: "study so you don't have to work in the fields", some people told me since I was a child. As if working in the field was unworthy.

I decided to change that belief thanks to one of my friends. He works in a company where his salary is twice as much as mine. I work in a university, so without going into figures you can imagine that my salary, although it is not one of the highest, is not one of the lowest either.

Nevertheless, that friend one day proposed to me to work in our free time at his grandfather's Vega. When he made me the offer I looked at him astonished, I thought it was a joke. I told him: with the salary you earn, you don't need to mistreat yourself in the Vega in the time you have to rest.

I did not understand. He has aspirations that I did not have at that time. He is also willing to move out of his comfort zone, to face discomfort and suffering in order to move forward in life. Then I understood that it was not the world that was denying me "what I deserved". It was myself who was not willing to face the discomfort that change implies.

These are the ideas that I wanted to share with you and that I remembered thanks to the initiative: Inconvenient Truths. In life there are different paths, we choose which one to take. It is not a matter of constantly changing activities. The human being needs stability, but it is necessary to adapt to the conditions that our environment confronts us with. We must do it with faith that we can learn to manage in them.

It is about knowing ourselves in order to value the different opportunities that life presents us with and to take advantage of the paths we find to reach our objectives. Sometimes the path is clear, sometimes it crisscrosses like railroad lines, sometimes there are sharp curves where we do not see the next steps but that is life my friend.

With these ideas in mind I thank you for the company up to here. I leave you a friendly embrace.
