Comfort: An Esteemed Luxury
I grew up in a financial environment where comfort was a luxury. However, I'll paint a distinctive picture for you, to see if it feels relatable. Comfort is quite different from luxury in the sense that when you talk about comfort, it was having just the right amount and luxury was having the right amount and the ability to muster even more. I was raised to believe that lack and want was a tool used in curtailing excessive tendencies. Hence, I grew up seeing it as a gift.
I went to a modest school where the school fee was fractions of what they paid in not "better" but luxury schools. However, the level of education was the same, the only difference was the mindset. Having money or becoming successful was expected from these kids because of the tons of investment used in training them, but for us, the expectation was low because the resources and the connection wasn't there.
I grew up thinking that rich kids were wasteful whenever they spend, hence I always had the belief that they'll become failures at the latter end of their lives.
while this is a possibility, this isn't always the case. So as I grew older, I realized that exposure to high volumes when it came to currency, resources and means is a financial education on its own. Truth is, inasmuch as accessibility to money we never own or work for can make one develop wasteful tendencies, it can also be advantageous as well.
One thing with being in the position to make decisions with money is that whether we end up right or wrong, there's always an experience left to show that we have either made a mistake in the past or gotten it wrong. For example, when you give someone who has been poor all their lives a huge amount of money, they might panic. In a bid not to waste it, they might make irrational choices which might end up making them waste it
The Preparation For Abundance
Inasmuch as they didn't intend to waste that money in the first place. So many people aren't prepared for abundance, and this is because they don't know what it feels like. One of the reasons why people waste resources is because they're actually mindful of wastefulness, and in a bid to "not waste" they end up making "un-smart" choices. For example, people who mostly buy cheap things used to feel that they're saving cost.
Now sometimes a person might have the resources to spend on what is worthwhile, but choose not to because they feel a cheaper version of what they're buying would do the job, at the end of the day, they haven't bought longevity, so they'll still end up spending extra funds to buy that commodity which they could have initially bought and saved cost, but while the intention was to actually save cost, they've ended up buying "twice" and spending more due to the fact that the experience isn't actually there.
So while I grew up to believe that spending excessively is being wasteful, I have come to know that not spending well enough and rightly so is what is true wastefulness. In other words, no one's born with money expertise, they're integrated into it either by being exposed quite early or very late. You see, the rich kids I thought were being wasteful were only being integrated into accessibility to means and resources contrary to me that didn't have that luxury.
A lot of people were born with rigid financial norms, even as a teenager I believed that the only way to true financial responsibility was to only save; spend only on basic need and expunge any sort of comfort, I felt that comfort was tempting and should never be inclining, nevertheless, being comfortable increases one's chances of attaining luxury which should originally be considered a necessity.
The Dynamism Of Money
Money is dynamic, which means that the process of making or owning it will constantly change, thereby totally rewiring our knowledge, experiences and ideologies. This is why money no longer requires rigidity to actually save it. For example, in this 21st century, a person can buy a $7000 camera lens to enhance their photography work, in the 20th century, that money might be kept in hard currency because the owner might believe that any bid to spend it might pertain to wastefulness.
There's been rumors of politicians who store taxpayers' money in sewage systems to keep these moneys for their coming generations, at the end of the day, these monies are eaten by termite and devoured by age and utterly wasted in a bid to actually save it. You must understand that money is meant to be spent, sometimes spending money might amount to even owning it and putting it into good use, owning hard currency is not actually a thing anymore. It's important that we follow the trend of flexibility, because holding on to olden norms about money can only assure stagnancy.
