English Version

Every time I go through this area of Havana, in the modern neighborhood of Miramar, and pass in front of the Church of Jesus of Miramar, I cannot avoid stopping and taking a photograph of it. I am attracted by its sober façade, its imposing height and above all its great dome crowned by a cross at the very top that always contrasts with the blue of the sky. It is one of the largest churches in the surroundings and I dare to say also one of the most beautiful.

Almost always I photograph its exterior since in most of my visits the church is closed. I have often seen photographers working there, taking pictures of the girls who celebrate their fifteen years, dressed in costumes that evoke other times, posing in the gardens and stairways that surround the church. However, in my last visit something different happened, the wide wooden doors were open wide and I did not hesitate to enter.

I had already taken several photos from outside but this time I was able to complement my tour with images of the interior. The church is very spacious with a large central nave that leads to the main altar. The wooden benches, the statues of saints and the architectural details transmit solemnity. As always happens to me every time I enter these temples, just by crossing the threshold I feel a different energy, a unique peace that envelops everything.

In this place everything is monumental, the height of its ceilings, the columns that support the structure and the murals that narrate the way of the cross of Jesus Christ until his crucifixion, painted with vivid colors at the very top of the walls. The silence of the place, empty at that moment, allowed me to walk through it calmly and admire every detail. One aspect that has always caught my attention is the pipe organ considered one of the largest in Cuba, which is inside and although it is not functioning it gives even more grandeur to the whole.

The Church of Jesus of Miramar is very beautiful but even so it does not need excessive ornaments to impress. Its architecture, its monumental size and the atmosphere that is felt are enough to turn it into a special place.

It is a site that I will always admire, that is why every time I pass nearby and take some photo I see it differently and I am always left with the same sensation, that of being in front of a unique space, a special space where the sky meets the cross that crowns its dome.
