art is all that's left over.
–Margaret Atwood
Paint imaginary pictures
In our brains
All to impose a shape
That allows us to explain
The meaning
Behind the stories,
These vignettes
We sketch,
If only to say
Something touched us
We felt a burden
To express.
We use words
Because they’re real—
Not ciphers
But things.
We once used stone
As mineral vowels,
But now we code
Upon a different wall.
Binary or alpha
It’s all the same—
Telling, acting or showing…
Only the medium
Has changed.
We’ve found
Ways to push back
The mystery,
So our lives
Can have a history.
