One of the funniest things about humanity is how easy it is to forget about things once we’ve actually done them. During a semester or a term, we learn things in school, and we find reading those subjects easy because we’re looking forward to our exams, where we get to put what we’ve learned into practice. However, once we write the exam, once it’s done, we move on, and from that moment, we start forgetting all about everything that we’ve learned.
Now, we might not forget everything in totality, especially if you read to know and not just to pass your exams. You might still have some remnants of knowledge, but for you to take on another exam in that specific subject or topic, you’d need to study all over again, because the second you passed that stage of your life, you stopped remembering it.
This doesn’t just work for examinations, but also for our relationship with people. It’s why people who initiate breakups find it easier to move on than those who were broken up with. Especially for people who had no idea that the breakup was coming, it’s like reading a story but stopping midway. You really want to know what’s coming, and your brain won’t rest until you satisfy that curiosity. So, you keep thinking of it. And for that reason, many people seek closure from exes just because they’re trying to get that full stop to their story.
I guess this has to do with our innate need to be perfect, and for many, perfection means being able to finish what you started. After all, if something isn’t worth doing well, then it’s not worth doing at all. Also, society has painted failure as the worst thing after Armageddon, and people are so scared of it that they would rather be in a toxic place, enduring something that has already failed, only if everyone else will be tricked that they’re succeeding. It’s crazy!
So, sometimes, failing at something shouldn’t be such a bad thing, and quitting something shouldn’t be such a shocker either. We need to learn to move on, regardless of how our stories end. Whether there is more to come or that’s all there is to see, we do it all the same. And if it doesn’t work out, we move on. Life goes on.
Because if we keep focusing on how things could be, we will never fully appreciate the beauty of how things are now. That’s a lesson.
