This afternoon I did what I love most: I sat down at my computer, browsed through my files of unprocessed, unedited, and unshared photos, and then worked on them while remembering what they mean to me. And then, as I always do and love to do, I'm sharing them with you here on #Hive...

01 - "Tuesday the 13th"... / "Martes Trece"...

This old dog is usually at the taxi stand almost every day, and the taxi drivers who wait there for passengers have nicknamed him "Tuesday the 13th" because they say he's unlucky: they say he's been hit by motorcycles three times, and he also has a partially damaged eye from a fight with other dogs. On top of all that, he's also in a terrible mood. But it's not all bad luck for "Tuesday the 13th," because the taxi drivers have adopted him as a pet and give him food and fresh water. They also let him sleep inside the small office of the taxi company, although "Tuesday the 13th" continues to growl when they try to touch him...

02 - Where "El Andino" (The Andean)... / En donde "El Andino"...

There, in that old little house with its rusty corrugated metal roof, and through that equally old wooden door, was the only place where anyone could buy liquor illegally in the mid-80s, even kids like me and my high school classmates, who were probably only 14 or 15 years old at the time. The liquor was sold by a chubby old man with ruddy skin whom we all simply called "El Andino" (The Andean). But one day the old man died, and we, even though we were older and could buy liquor legally anywhere, I think that day we cried a little and drank a few shots in his memory...

馃摲 03 - Emilio wrote: "Thank God"... / Emilio escribi贸: "Gracias Dios"...

One moonless night last December, Emilio was riding his old bicycle home, quite drunk. Just a couple of blocks from his house, the power went out (they're very frequent here), plunging the street into complete darkness. In his drunken stupor, Emilio crashed spectacularly into a lamppost. The next day, as a way of giving thanks for not killing himself and only ending up with a huge bump on his head, Emilio wrote "Thank God" at the base of the post. Although the gossips in town say it was his wife who wrote it, because ever since that night, Emilio only gets drunk during the day and on foot...

馃摲 04 - The Lottery Ticket Kiosk... / El Quiosco de billetes de Loter铆a...

I remember it perfectly: It was 2017, one of those years of great shortages, one of those years when even with money in hand you couldn't buy anything to eat because there simply wasn't any... And then, at that small green tin kiosk, where in better times everyone went to buy lottery tickets, that "small miracle" happened: you could buy coffee, sugar, cigars, and even "hulled corn"... Today the kiosk is closed, its owners left town like so many others, but the people who are still here remember that "small miracle" when they pass by and see the little sign with the list of products...

05 - Enrique... / Enrique...

This is a really short but incredibly brave story: When he was just 15 years old, Enrique lost one of his legs in a car accident that nearly cost him his life. But since then, Enrique has been an example of optimism, spirit, and courage. He's never seen idle; he's always working, and he only uses his prosthesis to go to Mass on Sundays because he says he can move faster without it.

06 - Last night there, two people talked... / Anoche all铆, conversaron dos...

There's this street in the village where, at dawn, old iron chairs are always arranged differently each time. It's as if, at night, people鈥攖he neighbors, I mean鈥攇ather to chat and then go to sleep, leaving the chairs there, and sometimes even a small table... But for this photo, it seems that last night "only two people were talking"...

07 - This guy who always ignores me... / Este que siempre me ignora...

I don't know if this is exactly a story. But it's simply that this dog, when he's around, ignores me when I take pictures of him, even when I lie down in the street to take a portrait like this. It's as if he's playing a game of ignoring me, because when I stop pointing my camera at him, he turns his head towards me and watches me, and when I raise the camera, he looks away again...

08 - "Anno Domini"... / "Anno Domini"...

No, the "A and the D" on that banner doesn't actually mean "Anno Domini," but you know me, I love drama, and that seemed like a good title for this photo of an old window in the old colonial mansion where the local offices of the old "Democratic Action (AD)" party used to operate, which was perhaps the most popular before the arrival of "The Revolution" at the beginning of this century, something which has almost starved us to death, by the way. Anyway, the truth is that in recent days it seems that AD has set out to reclaim its offices, and this is one of them...

馃摲 09 - Cotton balls in Karla's garden... / Algodones en el jard铆n de Karla...

From the garden of Karla, our neighbor who paints stained glass, writes poems, raises dogs and cats, hates noise and rude people, and plants small flowering plants along the walkways on the sides of her street; cotton flowers sprouting on the branches emerge...
