Today I bring you a little reflection on Limbo (2010) and the handling of concepts in a video game, Limbo is one of those platform games where themes are touched without even using the element of narration. Only with its elements of soundtrack, setting, and graphics, Limbo manage to become in my personal opinion an essay on hope in the form of a video game.
Limbo for me represents a dozen different concepts very distant from each other, connected only by the actions that we can execute through the child with no name in a gothic environment that is a mere digital representation of the theological limbo as a concept, full of hostilities and as its name suggests, on the edge of everything.

This rendering takes its elements and takes them further without using things like dialogue or written story scripts, it achieves this through a severe setting where you feel constant hostility from every living thing in the game environment and crucial differences between our character and the rest of the humans in the story.
As the game progresses we can notice some hostility from other humans, however, these do not look animated. Their eyes do not glow white, unlike some enemy creatures throughout the story. However, it is a personal theory that the white glow in the eyes is a representation of hope in a physical way.
Since Limbo is a game made in black and white scale, it can't be analyzed with color-coding, but I found looking at dozens of details throughout the game's playthrough, basically everything material is black. The boy's eyes, the worms, the eyes of some creatures, and the electricity, all those elements have something in common: they are real but immaterial objects and they are painted white.
Regardless, everything that shares the white dye is related to the concept of consciousness and energy, if we take consciousness literally, it is nothing more than electrical impulses between our neurons, therefore all energy in this work is related to life, but... What about humans whose eyes do not glow white?
That was immediately my biggest doubt, why the children in the forest do not have glowing eyes, why do they attack the player, are the player's white eyes proper of the monsters? No that's not right, the spider doesn't have them either, what do the child and the worms have in common besides being able to be controlled by the player... Hope. But what does hope represent in the game of Limbo? It represents the ability to move and continue to other places.

I have a theory that these elements are a representation of hope, the worms have hope of becoming human-controlled and being able to become something better. Instead, the nameless boy's goal is to reach his sister and climb a ladder that many believe is a representation of his ascension to heaven.
Both are together with all other living beings, trapped in Limbo, surrounded by darkness and the deep despair of never being able to get out of that situation, always surrounded by that Film Noir type environment, drowned in eternal darkness. Of course, they fear and assault the nameless child, because there is nothing more dangerous to the world than hope.
By the time we finally arrive at the reunion with our sister, we can see that the boy has used monster corpses as resources, has overcome dozens of obstacles placed in his path, all of which were in his way for him to give up and be content to stay in his assigned "Place" of Limbo, locked alone in the forest forever away from his sister and his beloved cabin.
The boy's act of deciding and moving towards his sister breaks the natural order of Limbo in the story, in my theory it is hope that is his motivation and is the cause of everyone, being set in specific places. Humans do not chase the child once it leaves their "territories" and the only being that gave chase was the spider, in my eyes, the spider wished to take that hope from the child for itself.
I hope you enjoyed this little theory that I have elaborated on after playing Limbo, since it is a game with few narrative elements, it leaves much room to the mind to imagine and fill with theories the missing elements, something that I have done with pleasure and amount as you can see. What do you think of this game? I look forward to hearing from you in the comments.
