Photos can be deceitful, people often use them as an anchor to their memories of events that had happened in their lives but in reality what are they, what happens when a photo is taken? Do you capture a moment in time, or freeze a memento of it in your memory? Are they just ways to hold tight to a memory that was long gone, or do they remind us of times we wished things never happened to us? This film is the answer to those questions, and these questions are the ones we didn't want to look at.
"The way the world should not be remembered", if I were to describe One Hour Photo it would be like that, a film that summarizes all those complicated things that shouldn't happen at all, but they do. So, let's take a look at this One hour photo together, to see how a man can become obsessed with the photo of a father, a mother, an idea of a family that he just never had.

Loneliness and madness, the first thing that comes into my mind when watching Robin Williams in this film is that word, a profound and disturbing lonely portrait of a man, that is called "Sy", our main character, and we can see that in every angle, every shot, no matter where or how, there is something simply off about him.
That element is present throughout the film, and it's constantly moving forward with the plot in a silent way, pushing the characters around him and their actions toward Seymour into new horizons while he stalks and comes closer to the concept of family, becoming obsessed with a happy family he met on the job, an infatuation with the happiness he never had as a child.
That uncanny feeling that Robin Williams is capable of transmitting to us even when he is smiling and talking politely in this film is what makes this film shine in my memory, and this is built up by his small actions during the film, and as the saying goes, the devil is in the details.
Details like when he pushes his glasses towards his face as he comes closer to a delicate situation, or when he tries to focus on how to get out of it a lie as he scratches his hands in several moments during the film, these small details, make the viewer subconsciously feel uncomfortable, and transmit a vivid feeling in a way modern suspense cinema is long forgotten.

Cinema is but an old picture of itself (mementos if you wish to call them like that), about times and works that changed the world as they use them for inspiration, and this film is a fine example of said works as we can notice from the Hitchcock-like portrait of a madman that it is present within this film.
I would like to draw a line before comparing the works of Hitchcock like Psycho with One Hour Photo, as I would only be able to call One Hour Photo a serial killer origin film for about the 8/10 of the film, yet things change suddenly in a twist that made me wonder if someone on the set was either insane or they wanted to ruin the master performance of Robin Williams.
The film made a shift in tempo in such a sudden and unexpected way that it makes me wonder if they did it to piss the viewer off or to prove that we fall into the clich茅s more than we could admit, and when a story gives a creative escape to a famous clich茅, like the serial killer one in this case, things simply go wrong.

Robin Williams's performance in the film will be forever his most horror-inducing one in my eyes, as I see it as both a validation of himself as a human and actor and a show of the spark of his long-gone genius-like capabilities for both comedy and drama. Sadly this role is obfuscated by the lack of great music and supporting roles during the film, it is not that they did a bad job or something like it, but they fail to produce as much of an impact as Robin's.
These performances at the same time show us how depressed "Sy" truly is, that even when he is around people, fellow employees, or even friends, he fails to connect with any human been naturally, so it makes perfect sense as a portrayal of both a killer or a depressed man.
The thing is, Robins's performance goes from disturbing to upsetting while showing us how broken a man can become at the same time that it showed how utterly perfectionist and manic behavior is often a reflection of severe depression, something he was fighting with at the time he recorded the film, and I guess he chose the role to exemplify and deal with how he felt, something only a true warrior would do... Even if the war was finally lost.

The thing that makes this film feel so deeply special for me is how it treats the idea of a family, how it shows them like a huge deal and sets off them as some sort of Idols from the perspective of Seymour's twisted and broken mind, and one thing is certain, family is worth a lot of energy and effort, It's something that should be protected and appreciated.
It's no wonder that the Yorkin family is such a portrait of a perfect family during the film, after all, they have everything that is promised about life, from having a good home and good intrafamilial relationship between the members, yet they are also honest and kind to strangers like Seymour, something that is rarely seen in real life.
Have you ever wondered what would have been of you if you didn't have your family support as a child? And what about the other way around? If you didn't have a family to rely upon as a kid, it makes you wonder how the others who did have one thinks, so even if It's hard to understand "Sy" obsession with the Yorkin family, we can do so because once he was a broken child.

At some point in the film, Seymour nicknamed "Sy" several times in the story shows his true face to the detective holding the investigation, the face of a victim of rape, and this let me choose two sides of him to point when talking about this film.
Those two faces of a coin would be, "Sy" the child victim of a rapist father, and abusive mother, and Seymour who was the man that tried all his life to heal such wounds and became reclusive and obsessed with the Yorkin, his dream family come true.
This would have perpetuated his entire life if he did not saw the photos taken by Jakob in the film, Jakob's photos were special as he saw the world in such an innocent and childlike way making Sy and Seymour merge to protect that innocence at all cost, creating a psychotic crisis in the process.
He initially decided to kill Jakob's dad for his actions during the film, but that would have destroyed the innocence he tried to protect, so he did the next best thing, kill his relationship with his lover, in a way that Will Yorkin would never dare to cheat or hurt his family in any other way. This would scar Will so much that he would become a victim just as "Sy" ever was, finally exacting vengeance on his father in a symbolic way, by hurting someone else father and protecting Jakob's innocence.

This film's end was a bit puzzling and discontinuous in its narrative, it felt so counterintuitive and creative that made me wonder a lot about how I see parenthood, and the role of the wife in the film, Nina Yorkin was the example of a self-loving mother that was willing to endure cheating just for the sake of keeping her family together.
When you think about Nina, you could see how much she felt neglected and unloved by Will, yet she still kept the image of a happy family for her son, making those extreme sacrifices for the love she felt for her child, Jakob, we even see references of this as she read Deepak Chopra books about family, love, and meaning of life.
This sacrifice no matter how altruistic it might be seen from the outside, it's destined to destroy her and her son eventually, and that is something that should never be even on the table of choices available for her, and that made Seymour's image of her to fall off the altar he had of her, she was supposed to divorce rather than endure, life is not meant for us to suffer, and a son seeing a mother suffering like that and his father endless cheating and excuses, it would do no good.
One way or another I would call this film a master performance of Robin Williams, that failed to give in to the cliches and by doing so, it got rejected by the mainstream, ending up with a small following and support, with time people will appreciate how much a comedy actor can go if allowed to do so, and after seeing Uncut Gems of Adam Sandler, I'm convinced these "cheap comedy actors" on Hollywood, have a great hidden talent that sadly will never be developed in this case, may you rest in peace, Robin Williams.

I found this film to be my favorite on yesterday's movie day, I was supposed to publish this yesterday but I ended up doing a marathon of Robin Williams films as he had several non-comedic works that me think deeply about how he coped with his psychological struggles, something worth my admiration.

Soledad y locura, lo primero que me viene a la mente al ver a Robin Williams en esta pel铆cula es esa palabra, un profundo e inquietante retrato solitario de un hombre, que se llama "Sy", nuestro protagonista, y podemos ver que en cada 谩ngulo, en cada plano, no importa d贸nde o c贸mo, hay algo simplemente apagado en 茅l.
Ese elemento est谩 presente durante toda la pel铆cula, y hace avanzar constantemente la trama de forma silenciosa, empujando a los personajes que le rodean y sus acciones hacia Seymour hacia nuevos horizontes mientras 茅l acecha y se acerca al concepto de familia, obsesion谩ndose con una familia feliz que conoci贸 en el trabajo, un enamoramiento de la felicidad que nunca tuvo de ni帽o.
Esa extra帽a sensaci贸n que Robin Williams es capaz de transmitirnos incluso cuando sonr铆e y habla amablemente en esta pel铆cula es lo que hace que esta pel铆cula brille en mi memoria, y esto se construye con sus peque帽as acciones durante la pel铆cula, y como dice el refr谩n, el diablo est谩 en los detalles.
Detalles como cuando se empuja las gafas hacia la cara al acercarse a una situaci贸n delicada, o cuando intenta concentrarse en c贸mo salir de la mentira mientras se rasca las manos en varios momentos de la pel铆cula, estos peque帽os detalles, hacen que el espectador inconscientemente se sienta inc贸modo, y transmiten una sensaci贸n v铆vida de una forma que el cine de suspense moderno hace tiempo que olvid贸.

El cine no es m谩s que un viejo retrato de s铆 mismo (recuerdos si quieres llamarlos as铆), sobre 茅pocas y obras que cambiaron el mundo ya que las utilizan como inspiraci贸n, y esta pel铆cula es un buen ejemplo de dichas obras como podemos notar en el retrato de un loco a lo Hitchcock que est谩 presente dentro de esta pel铆cula.
Me gustar铆a trazar una l铆nea antes de comparar las obras de Hitchcock como Psicosis con One Hour Photo, ya que s贸lo podr铆a llamar a One Hour Photo una pel铆cula de origen de asesino en serie durante aproximadamente los 8/10 de la pel铆cula, sin embargo, las cosas cambian de repente en un giro que me hizo preguntarme si alguien en el set estaba loco o quer铆an arruinar la magistral actuaci贸n de Robin Williams.
La pel铆cula dio un giro tan repentino e inesperado que me hace preguntarme si lo hicieron para cabrear al espectador o para demostrar que caemos en los clich茅s m谩s de lo que podr铆amos admitir, y cuando una historia da una salida creativa a un clich茅 famoso, como el del asesino en serie en este caso, las cosas simplemente se tuercen.

La actuaci贸n de Robin Williams en la pel铆cula ser谩 para siempre su actuaci贸n m谩s terror铆fica a mis ojos, ya que la veo tanto como una validaci贸n de s铆 mismo como ser humano y actor como una muestra de la chispa de sus capacidades de genio tanto para la comedia como para el drama. Lamentablemente este papel se ve ofuscado por la falta de grandes actuaciones musicales y secundarias durante la pel铆cula, no es que hicieran un mal trabajo o algo parecido, pero no consiguen producir tanto impacto como la de Robin.
Estas actuaciones al mismo tiempo nos muestran lo deprimido que realmente est谩 "Sy", que incluso cuando est谩 rodeado de gente, compa帽eros de trabajo o incluso amigos, no consigue conectar con ning煤n humano de forma natural, por lo que tiene mucho sentido como retrato tanto de un asesino como de un hombre deprimido.
El caso es que la interpretaci贸n de Robins va de perturbadora a perturbadora, a la vez que nos muestra lo destrozado que puede llegar a estar un hombre, a la vez que muestra c贸mo un comportamiento totalmente perfeccionista y man铆aco es a menudo un reflejo de una depresi贸n severa, algo con lo que 茅l estaba luchando en el momento en que grab贸 la pel铆cula, y supongo que eligi贸 el papel para ejemplificar y tratar c贸mo se sent铆a, algo que s贸lo har铆a un verdadero guerrero... Lo que hace que esta pel铆cula me parezca tan profundamente especial es c贸mo trata la idea de una familia, c贸mo la muestra como algo enorme y la presenta como una especie de 铆dolos desde la perspectiva de la mente retorcida y rota de Seymour, y una cosa es cierta, la familia merece mucha energ铆a y esfuerzo, es algo que debe protegerse y apreciarse.
No es de extra帽ar que la familia Yorkin sea el retrato de una familia perfecta durante la pel铆cula, despu茅s de todo, tienen todo lo que promete la vida, desde tener un buen hogar y una buena relaci贸n intrafamiliar entre los miembros, y sin embargo tambi茅n son honestos y amables con extra帽os como Seymour, algo que rara vez se ve en la vida real.
驴Te has preguntado alguna vez qu茅 habr铆a sido de ti si no hubieras tenido el apoyo de tu familia cuando eras ni帽o? 驴Y al rev茅s? Si no tuviste una familia en la que apoyarte de ni帽o, te hace preguntarte c贸mo piensan los dem谩s que s铆 la tuvieron, as铆 que aunque sea dif铆cil entender la obsesi贸n de "Sy" por la familia Yorkin, podemos hacerlo porque una vez fue un ni帽o roto.

En alg煤n momento de la pel铆cula, Seymour apodado "Sy" varias veces en la historia muestra su verdadero rostro al detective que lleva la investigaci贸n, el rostro de una v铆ctima de violaci贸n, y esto me permite elegir dos caras de 茅l para se帽alar al hablar de esta pel铆cula.
Esas dos caras de una moneda ser铆an, "Sy" el ni帽o v铆ctima de un padre violador, y una madre maltratadora, y Seymour que fue el hombre que intent贸 toda su vida curar esas heridas y se volvi贸 recluso y obsesionado con los Yorkin, su familia so帽ada hecha realidad.
Esto habr铆a perpetuado toda su vida si no hubiera visto las fotos tomadas por Jakob en la pel铆cula, las fotos de Jakob eran especiales ya que ve铆a el mundo de una manera tan inocente e infantil haciendo que Sy y Seymour se fusionaran para proteger esa inocencia a toda costa, creando una crisis psic贸tica en el proceso.
Inicialmente decidi贸 matar al padre de Jakob por sus acciones durante la pel铆cula, pero eso habr铆a destruido la inocencia que intentaba proteger, as铆 que hizo lo siguiente mejor, matar su relaci贸n con su amante, de forma que Will Yorkin nunca se atrever铆a a enga帽ar o herir a su familia de ninguna otra forma. Esto marcar铆a tanto a Will que se convertir铆a en una v铆ctima como lo fue siempre "Sy", veng谩ndose finalmente de su padre de forma simb贸lica, hiriendo al padre de otro y protegiendo la inocencia de Jakob.

El final de esta pel铆cula fue un poco desconcertante y discontinuo en su narrativa, se sinti贸 tan contraintuitivo y creativo que me hizo preguntarme mucho acerca de c贸mo veo la paternidad, y el papel de la esposa en la pel铆cula, Nina Yorkin fue el ejemplo de una madre amorosa que estaba dispuesta a soportar el enga帽o s贸lo por el bien de mantener unida a su familia.
Cuando se piensa en Nina, se puede ver lo mucho que se sinti贸 abandonada y no amada por Will, pero a煤n as铆 mantuvo la imagen de una familia feliz para su hijo, haciendo esos sacrificios extremos por el amor que sent铆a por su hijo, Jakob, incluso vemos referencias de esto mientras le铆a libros de Deepak Chopra sobre la familia, el amor y el sentido de la vida.
Este sacrificio, por muy altruista que se vea desde fuera, est谩 destinado a destruirla a ella y a su hijo finalmente, y eso es algo que nunca deber铆a estar siquiera sobre la mesa de las opciones disponibles para ella, y eso hizo que la imagen que Seymour ten铆a de ella se cayera del altar que ten铆a de ella, se supon铆a que deb铆a divorciarse en lugar de aguantar, la vida no est谩 hecha para que suframos, y un hijo viendo a una madre sufriendo as铆 y a su padre enga帽ando sin parar y con excusas, no le har铆a ning煤n bien.
De una manera u otra yo llamar铆a a esta pel铆cula una actuaci贸n magistral de Robin Williams, que no cedi贸 a los clich茅s y al hacerlo, fue rechazada por la corriente principal, terminando con un peque帽o seguimiento y apoyo, con el tiempo la gente apreciar谩 lo mucho que un actor de comedia puede llegar si se le permite hacerlo, y despu茅s de ver Uncut Gems de Adam Sandler, estoy convencido de que estos "actores de comedia barata" en Hollywood, tienen un gran talento oculto que lamentablemente nunca se desarrollar谩 en este caso, que descanses en paz, Robin Williams.
Se supon铆a que iba a publicar esto ayer, pero termin茅 haciendo un marat贸n de pel铆culas de Robin Williams, ya que ten铆a varias obras no c贸micas que me hacen pensar profundamente acerca de c贸mo hizo frente a sus luchas psicol贸gicas, algo digno de mi admiraci贸n.
La vida esta hecha para ser feliz, y si no es as铆, debemos hacer nuestro mayor esfuerzo en lograrlo, puede haber algunos descarrilamientos aqu铆 y all谩, pero perder la cabeza por cosas de nuestro pasado es inaceptable, si estas pasando por un mal momento y necesitas una persona con quien hablar, puedes comentar este post en cualquier momento, solo no te pongas en plan "Sy", las cosas pueden mejorar dado el tiempo y el esfuerzo, un gran abrazo y espero que tengas una gran semana si le铆ste hasta aqu铆, cr茅eme, las cosas mejoraran.
