Let’s move on to another Spanish comedy—this one a bit more zany, packed with eccentric and unhinged characters, and unfolding at a breakneck pace. It’s an ideal choice for a weekend when you simply want to leave your daily worries behind. The film’s sole purpose is for you to relax for an hour and a half and have a good time with a truly colorful cast of characters.

What caught my eye was the cast and, of course, the director, Arantxa Echevarría. Her previous work was La infiltrada—an excellent film based on true events about an agent who goes undercover within the terrorist group ETA. Here, she takes a radical turn, stepping away from such a serious subject to craft a piece of pure entertainment.

The film’s title, Cada día nace un listo ("A 'clever guy' is born every day"), calls to mind a well-known Spanish saying: "A fool heads out onto the street every single day—woe to whoever runs into him!" I think the saying fits this film perfectly: it is full of characters who fancy themselves smarter than everyone else, constantly looking to deceive, swindle, or harm those around them—whether they be friends, ex-partners, or anyone else. Money makes the world go round, and everyone wants to be the "clever one" who walks away with the big prize.

The story centers on Toni Lomas, a former reality show contestant who still clings to a shred of fame but is completely broke—he doesn’t even have a place to live. He scrapes by however he can, all the while desperately trying to keep up appearances. He holds tight to his past glory, even though his best days are long gone. The character is played by Hugo Silva, a highly reliable actor whose performance and witty remarks I found genuinely entertaining. An opportunity to earn 50,000 euros arises when the boyfriend of the woman our protagonist desires suggests stealing a painting that once belonged to her father—a man who, in his lifetime, had swindled many people. For our protagonist, this money is the perfect solution to settle debts he owes to some rather shady characters. However, he is so inept that he needs the help of Mari, an old-school con artist, who in turn recruits "El Gallego"—a criminal who is as unhinged as he is dim-witted.

As you can see, the cast of characters in this film is a motley crew, each one more foolish than the last; there is certainly no shortage of stupidity. This is the premise that sets the story in motion, leading to a series of absurd situations the characters must face: narrow escapes, beatings, the Eastern European mafia, deceptions, and—believe it or not—even an ostrich thrown into the mix.

To be honest, I had a lot of fun watching it. It’s not the kind of humor that appeals to everyone—it’s not exactly an "intelligent" comedy, and at times it can be a bit crude, though it never crosses the line into being truly offensive. We have a group of idiots trying to act clever, and the result is a highly entertaining experience as you watch them stumble over their own mistakes. That said, there might just be someone truly cunning in the group who manages to come out on top; perhaps it’s the quietest one who delivers the most surprising final twist.

It’s available on Netflix—a platform that’s as loved as it is hated. When you get a chance to watch this comedy, let me know what you think in the comments!

Siendo sincero, me divertí mucho viéndola.
