Being a Nigerian there are certain food that I have known that the people of this country would die and go extinct without.
Well you know I was joking Nigerians can always survive anywhere you find them. That's why they are almost everywhere in every country of the world eating whatever they have as food. But when they come back home they know the difference between what they have been eating and what we have at home.
A friend of mine once told me she missed the native food of our country called amala. But she was in a place where to eat that, one has to be able to afford it at a very expensive rate.
Nigerians survive day to day on just a handful of food materials. We don't have so much food like that We eat the common things and leave the special things for special locations.
But then some food materials will practical be missed if they stop existing.
I will be listing a few of them in this post and making you realize just how much we can not do without them.
Bread is known as the most commonly eaten food across the whole nation. If you own a bread-baking factory you are totally in business. You will never go home with your bread unsold because everybody loves bread. With bread you can take it and drink water, You can take it with ground nuts or mix it with any soft drink and still be satisfied. ances and like people such that you eat them and they do not satisfy you. Whoever said people should begin to get smarter in the wrong way. The mixture of bread with substances like bromate to make it swell and appear big. I find the statement quantity is not quality true when ever I eat such bread. A big bread may not give you satisfaction as eating a small bread can give you. So bread is not always in the size but the weight and the content.
Rice used to be a very special delicacy back in the day. In fact in some families rice was only eating on Christmas Day and then they go back to their traditional delicacies for the rest of the year. If you ate rice more regularly back then it will be only on Sundays after church service when everyone comes back to the smell of stew and white rice Or those occasions, where rice was frequently eaten like at wedding ceremonies where that jollof rice, sounds like "your love for rice". Recently there had been a tango between Nigerians and Ghanaians about whose child rise who was more delicious. For me it doesn't matter what country it is what matters is how it was prepared. And then comes the one we call party Jollof. This refers to rice made in parties, child dedication parties, wedding parties, and burial parties.
Okay already by now you know that Nigerians love to party especially the Yorubas.
Rice has become more commoner these days. Eventually every home eat rice every day of the week. This is not because it became less expensive however with the rate of civilization and urbanisation, folks have begun to see more benefits in eating rice, one I them being that it is faster to prepare and it is straightforward.
Speaking of fastness to prepare, noodles stands undefeated. They practically thank God for the invention of this type of food. It appears as pre-cooked food that is then packaged and sent out into the market for us to buy and then finish the cooking. We have so many companies making all sorts of brands in Nigeria and they keep selling out. It is faster to prepare, 10 minutes at the maximum and your meal is ready. Nigerians love to be on the go and so they wouldn't want to be delayed because they are trying to prepare a meal that takes two hours.
Garri has been saving Nigerians right from 1808. The development of the love for garri is quite present in every Nigerian that I know. Except anyone wants to come from under this post. The things that Garri has done are miraculous in our sights. If not for garri a lot of students would have suffered perilous hunger. It is just as simple as pouring water into it and that is all. Those whose pockets are a abit heavier can get sugar, fish, kuli kuli (ground nut cake)or even groundnut itself.
Garri goes with anything and it can be made conformable to anything as well.
You can also make it solid with hot water forming what we call eba.
You wonder what this guy is right? Cassava grounded, dried and fried into flakes and they have your garri. It has practically made the life of Nigerians better at least to survive. Without Garri Nigerians will feel it.
Other Nigerian may want to add to the list, but these ones are the most common I know.
