Golßen is a small town of Lower Lusatia in the district Dahme-Spreewald, Land Brandenburg. The area around Golßen was populated already in the last phase of the Paleolithic (Palaeolithic) about 10,000 years ago.
Other archaeological finds from the Bronze Age (1700 - 700 BC), the Lusatian culture (1300 - 500 BC), the Iron Age (700 BC - 600 AD) and from the settlement by Germanic and Sorbian tribes prove these early settlements. At the nearby Utzenberg the Slawaen put on a fortification (circular rampart), which in the course of the German Ostkolonisationim from 936 n.Chr. was taken over by German settlers and was expanded to a small castle.
The meaning of the name Golßen is based on two assumptions: First, Golssen could be borrowed from the name of a knight seat nams Golis (law) as "Golsyn" or as an attachment or hill after the Slavic word "Cholzin". The first written mention of "Golsyn" took place on a deed of donation of the Wettiner on 21st February 1276.
As a city Golßen was first mentioned on 21st February 1397. In the 13./14. Century was Golßen seat of several bailiffs.
To Golßen include the districts Altgolßen, Landwehr and Prierow and the districts Mahlsdorf and Zützen with the community parts Gersdorf and Sagritz.
