One Sunny Day in Metz.jpg

Checking in from France!

I had the opportunity to visit METZ in April last year. It was a longer break, as it was a weekend break, so of course I had to take the opportunity to see a few things. Luckily, I managed to park my truck in a safe place very close to the city centre, so this time I didn’t have to use public transport and everything was within walking distance for me.

On the first day, I went to the botanical garden, whose plants and flowers you’ve already had the chance to see on my profile, and on the second day I went to explore the city. Not all of my photos turned out well that day. And as far as I remember, you’ve already had the chance to see some of the photos on my profile too, but today, while going through my portfolio, I came across a few more that I’d like to share with you now.

Metz is a city in northeastern France, in the Lorraine region, and the history of the city dates back to around 3000 BC. In Roman times, Metz was one of the more important cities in Gaul. Later, it was, among other things, the capital of the Frankish Kingdom of Austrasia and was closely connected with the history of the Carolingians.

In Metz, we can find buildings in various architectural styles, including Romanesque Revival, Gothic Revival and Renaissance Revival. This was a result of its earlier history, as Metz was under German administration for a period of time. Walking through Metz, you can see architecture from very different periods standing side by side.

Metz to miasto w północno-wschodniej Francji, w regionie Lotaryngii, a sama historia miasta sięga czasów około 3000 roku p.n.e.

One of the more interesting buildings I came across in Metz was the TEMPLE NEUF, which was built at the beginning of the 20th century, when Metz was under German rule. The temple was designed by architect Conrad Wahn in the Romanesque Revival style. He was also inspired by Romanesque churches from the Rhine Valley. The building was constructed from grey sandstone from the Vosges, which makes it stand out from many other buildings in Metz.

The location of the TEMPLE NEUF is quite interesting. The temple is situated on the island of Petit-Saulcy, between two branches of the Moselle, so from the other side of the river you can see it surrounded by water and greenery, which is partly visible in my photos. The building was officially opened on 14 May 1904 in the presence of Emperor Wilhelm II and Empress Augusta Victoria.

Another quite interesting building is the HÔTEL DES POSTES, the former main post office. The building is listed as a French historic monument and was constructed between 1907 and 1911, also during the German period. Interestingly, the original design was never completed. The southern wing and the final square tower were never built.

The building was constructed opposite the railway station, which, by the way, is also quite impressive and, if I remember correctly, has already appeared on my profile. The location of the HÔTEL DES POSTES was therefore no coincidence, as its proximity to the railway made it possible to transport mail efficiently, including for military purposes. The building was constructed in the Romanesque Revival style, and its monumental architecture was intended to harmonise with the nearby railway station. Its façade is made of pink-red sandstone and its appearance was not accidental either - it was designed to resemble a fortress wall, hence the building’s rather heavy, almost defensive appearance.

Another building that caught my attention was the CHAPELLE SAINT-CHARLES-BORROMÉE, the Chapel of Saint Charles Borromeo, built around the same time as the HÔTEL DES POSTES, so also during the German period. It is worth mentioning that this is the only building in Metz with both an external dome and an internal domed vault.

And it is precisely this huge dome, which can be seen so clearly in my photo, that is the most characteristic element of the entire building. The chapel was designed in the Neo-Baroque style, which reflected the German architectural tastes of that period.

In the next photos, we can see PORTE DES ALLEMANDS, or the Germans' Gate, which actually looks a bit like a small castle. The gate has a very interesting history. It was built in the 13th century and is the only well-preserved medieval city gate in Metz. It served both as a defensive gate and as a fortified bridge over the Seille River. Its name comes from the Teutonic Order.

Originally, the gate was built with two lower towers on the city side. Over time, two more massive towers, about 28 metres high, were added. Their walls were extremely thick - around 3.5 metres - because the structure had to withstand the artillery of that period. The two sections were later connected by a bridge with an arcaded gallery. Another interesting fact is that Metz once had as many as 18 gates and 38 defensive towers, while PORTE DES ALLEMANDS is today one of the most important surviving remains of the city's former fortifications. The gate was also listed as a French historic monument and, after renovation, was reopened to visitors in 2014.

Walking through Metz, I also came across PLACE DE LA COMÉDIE, located on the island of Petit-Saulcy. The entire square was designed as a representative and cohesive urban space. The buildings were constructed in a classical style and made from the light-coloured stone characteristic of Metz. In the photo below, we can see one of the buildings belonging to this complex, namely PAVILLON SAINT-MARCEL. Over the years, various businesses operated on its ground floor, including a restaurant.

The most important building on the square is OPÉRA-THÉÂTRE, but for some reason that I don't know, I didn't capture it in any of my photos.

In my photos, however, I also captured LA SENTINAILE, an abstract sculpture by Antoine Poncet. The sculpture stands behind the former military arsenal, which was converted into a concert hall, and is made of white marble. It was placed there in 1999 to mark the tenth anniversary of the Arsenal's transformation.
The sculpture is described as a kind of guardian looking towards the future and watching over the idea of a united Europe.

In Metz, you can also find several bridges. One of them is the PONT DES ROCHES, or the Rocks Bridge. The bridge was built in 1739 during a major redevelopment of the Petit-Saulcy island, carried out on the initiative of Marshal de Belle-Isle. The bridge was intended to connect the developing part of the city with its historic centre.
The name of the bridge comes from the former Les Roches district. In the past, it was also known as PONT DE CHAMBRE and PONT DE LA COMÉDIE, referring to the places it connected.

W Metz można znaleźć również kilka mostów. Jednym z nich jest PONT DES ROCHES, czyli Most Skał. Most zbudowano w 1739 roku podczas dużej przebudowy wyspy Petit-Saulcy, prowadzonej z inicjatywy marszałka de Belle-Isle. Most miał łączyć rozwijającą się część miasta z historycznym centrum.

And at the very end, I would like to add one photo from the botanical garden in Metz. It shows one of the greenhouses. It looked very beautiful in the sunlight, so I decided to photograph it.
