Checking in from Spain!
Recently, I was doing a bit of tidying up in Lightroom, as I have one large catalogue that I'd finally like to organise. I came across a few more photos from my visit to Leipzig and decided to make some use of them and show them to you today.
As far as I remember, I haven't shared many photos from Leipzig with you, but to be honest, quite a lot of the shots from that trip didn't turn out well either. I visited Leipzig in May last year, so it was still fairly early in my photography journey.
Nevertheless, a few photos have survived, and here are the results.
I'll start with AUGUSTUSPLATZ, where I have several views of the same buildings. The pale building reflected in the water is the LEIPZIG OPERA HOUSE. It opened in 1960 and was designed by Kunz Nierade and Kurt Hemmerling. Its restrained facade belongs to the architecture of the 1950s, even if the symmetry and columns might suggest an older building at first glance.
Zacznę od AUGUSTUSPLATZ, skąd mam kilka ujęć tych samych budynków. Jasny gmach odbijający się w wodzie to OPERA LIPSKA. Został otwarty w 1960 roku, a zaprojektowali go Kunz Nierade i Kurt Hemmerling. Jego oszczędna fasada należy do architektury lat 50. XX wieku, choć symetria i kolumny mogą na pierwszy rzut oka sugerować starszy budynek.
The shorter tower with the clock is the KROCHHOCHHAUS, Leipzig's first high-rise, built in 1927-1928 for the Kroch bank. The two figures on its roof strike the bells. Its design drew on the clock tower in Venice's ST MARK'S SQUARE. In my wider views, it shares the frame with the opera, so I've kept those photographs together.
Niższa wieża z zegarem to KROCHHOCHHAUS, pierwszy wysokościowiec Lipska, zbudowany w latach 1927-1928 dla banku Kroch. Dwie postacie na dachu uderzają w dzwony. Projekt nawiązywał do wieży zegarowej na weneckim PLACU ŚW. MARKA. W moich szerszych kadrach budynek pojawia się razem z operą, dlatego zostawiłam te zdjęcia obok siebie.
The much taller CITY-HOCHHAUS belongs to another period. Hermann Henselmann designed it for the university, and it was built in 1968-1972. At the left edge of my vertical photograph is the GEWANDHAUS, the concert hall opened in 1981. These few frames bring together several quite different chapters of the square's architecture.
Znacznie wyższy CITY-HOCHHAUS pochodzi z innego okresu. Hermann Henselmann zaprojektował go dla uniwersytetu, a budowa trwała w latach 1968-1972.
From the broad square, I'll move on to the much smaller OLD STOCK EXCHANGE (ALTE BÖRSE) on NASCHMARKT. This is Leipzig's oldest BAROQUE building. Merchants had it built as a meeting place in the 17th century: business deals, auctions and the trading of bills of exchange took place here. Today it hosts cultural events and gatherings. In my photograph, the double staircase takes up almost as much space as the facade itself.
Z rozległego placu przejdę do znacznie mniejszej STAREJ GIEŁDY (ALTE BÖRSE) przy NASCHMARKT. To najstarszy BAROKOWY budynek Lipska. Kupcy wznieśli go w XVII wieku jako miejsce spotkań: zawierano tu transakcje, organizowano aukcje i handlowano wekslami.
I've already devoted a separate post to the OLD TOWN HALL and NEW TOWN HALL, so here I'm showing another side of the MARKT. On the right is the OLD WEIGH HOUSE (ALTE WAAGE), with its stepped gable. The original building dated from 1555, but what we see today was rebuilt in 1963-1964 after wartime destruction. The facade facing the square follows the historical design; the side facing Katharinenstraße is modern. The narrow, steep-roofed building further left is the BAARMANNSCHES HAUS. Its roof recalls the GOTHIC house that once stood there.
I also photographed ST THOMAS'S CHURCH (THOMASKIRCHE) from outside. Behind this view of the white tower and pointed windows is a substantial piece of Leipzig's musical history. Johann Sebastian Bach was Thomaskantor from 1723 until 1750, and his tomb has been in the church's chancel since 1950. The church is also the home of the ST THOMAS CHOIR.
Sfotografowałam też z zewnątrz KOŚCIÓŁ ŚW. TOMASZA (THOMASKIRCHE). TOMASZA.
Beside the church, I also have a frame of the former KAUFHAUS EBERT, with the Commerzbank sign above the entrance. Built in 1902-1904, it began as a department store. The large windows belong to that commercial past. In this photograph I can also show you the gold-coloured ornament around the entrance and high up on the corner gable, where the decoration continues right to the top.
I'll finish this selection with three photographs of LEIPZIG CENTRAL STATION (LEIPZIG HAUPTBAHNHOF), one from outside and two from inside. The station opened on 1 October 1915. The PROMENADEN shopping area followed during its modernisation in 1997, which explains the shops beneath those much older-looking halls. I've kept the interior frames together: one looks towards the tall windows and clock, while the other shows the staircase and the patterned vault overhead.
