Our stop today takes us to the heart of the University City of Caracas, home of the Central University of Venezuela, the first house of studies at national level and my Alma Mater, one of the most iconic and representative points of this magnificent architectural work is the Plaza del Rectorado, A large esplanade from which you can get a total view of one of the most important buildings of the University life, in addition to its large dimensions this is a place from where you can convey a great sense of power, academic greatness and perfection, all this under a simple architectural style, delicate and very well thought out.

Nuestra parada el d铆a de hoy nos lleva al coraz贸n de la Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas, sede de la Universidad Central de Venezuela, la primera casa de estudios a nivel nacional y mi Alma Mater, uno de los puntos m谩s ic贸nicos y representativos de esta magn铆fica obra arquitect贸nica es la Plaza del Rectorado, una gran explanada desde la cual se obtiene una vista total de uno de los edificios m谩s importantes de la vida Universitaria, adem谩s por sus grandes dimensiones este es un lugar desde donde se puede transmitir una gran sensaci贸n de poder, grandeza acad茅mica y perfecci贸n, todo esto bajo un estilo arquitect贸nico sencillo, delicado y muy bien pensado.

This is perhaps a space whose characteristics seem somewhat discordant with the original spirit of the work designed by the architect Carlos Ra煤l Villanueva, and the truth is that the construction of this Plaza would take place approximately 20 years after the inauguration of the entire university city, which undoubtedly marks an addition to the project that was initially planned. Originally, the spaces that today cover this great esplanade were used as a large car park, which served the rectorate and the central offices, but this was perhaps not the most aesthetically appropriate use, as it accumulated in front of this important building a large number of vehicles, which in turn generated noise, smoke and other elements that did not fit in with ideal landscaping.
Este es quiz谩s un espacio que por sus caracter铆sticas pareciera algo discordante por el esp铆ritu original de la obra dise帽ada por el arquitecto Carlos Ra煤l Villanueva y la verdad es que la construcci贸n de esta Plaza se concretar铆a aproximadamente 20 a帽os despu茅s de haber inaugurado toda la ciudad universitaria, lo cual sin duda alguna marca un anexo al proyecto inicialmente planteado. Originalmente, los espacios que hoy cubren esta gran explanada eran usados como un gran estacionamiento, el cual prestaba servicio al rectorado y las dependencias centrales, pero realmente este era un uso quiz谩s no era el est茅ticamente m谩s adecuado, ya que acumulaba frente a este importante edificio una gran cantidad de veh铆culos, que a su vez generaban ruido, humo y otros elementos que pocos adecuaban a un paisajismo ideal.
I really don't know what were the reasons that inspired the current design of this public space, but I am sure that the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at the time would have thought of a place where the greatness, peace and importance of the main university would be projected, an environment where academia, teaching, research, culture, nature and art go hand in hand in the construction of a better future.
Realmente no s茅 cu谩les fueron las razones que inspiraron al dise帽o actual de este espacio p煤blico, pero estoy seguro de que la Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo en su momento habr铆a pensado, en un lugar en donde se proyectar谩 la grandeza, la paz y la importancia de la principal casa de estudios, un ambiente en donde constantemente la academia, la docencia, la investigaci贸n, la cultura, la naturaleza y el arte van tomadas de la mano en la construcci贸n de un mejor futuro.
From the square we find a large entrance portico, which welcomes us to the rectorate building. It is a very interesting element, since we can admire the great work done on the concrete, which allowed a perfect modelling generating columns and arches that give us a sense of movement and fluidity.
Desde la plaza encontramos un gran p贸rtico de acceso, el cual nos da la bienvenida al edificio del rectorado, se trata de un elemento muy interesante, puesto que se puede admirar el grandioso trabajo hecho sobre el concreto, el cual permiti贸 un modelaje perfecto generando columnas y arcos que nos brindan una sensaci贸n de movimiento y fluidez.
The most important element of this urban space is undoubtedly the clock tower, a monumental structure about 25 m high, made of a solid concrete column, from which stand out three large pillars that seem to be inclined, each one of them representing a vital element in the University life (Academy, Research and Extension), The three large discs are crowned by three large discs with dark backgrounds and yellow spires, which advance to the rhythm of time and every half hour their bells resound throughout the university campus, thus marking the importance of life.
El elemento m谩s importante de este espacio urbano es sin duda alguna es la torre del reloj, una estructura monumental de unos 25 m de altura, elaborada en una s贸lida columna de concreto, desde donde se destacan tres grandes pilares que parecieran estar inclinados, cada uno de ellos representando a un elemento vital dentro de la vida Universitaria (Academia, Investigaci贸n y Extensi贸n) y siendo coronada por tres grandes discos de fondos oscuros y agujas amarillas, las cuales van avanzando al ritmo del tiempo y cada media hora sus campanas resuenan a lo largo y ancho de todo el campus universitario, marcando de esta manera la importancia de la vida.
At the northwest end of the Plaza we can find a figure of somewhat abstract form, it is a sculpture by the important Venezuelan artist Francisco Narv谩ez, who in 1954 forged this imposing work of art in bronze, initially to be placed in the prizes of the Central Library, but thanks to fate it ended up being installed in this part of the plaza, which really seems to me a very good idea, as it gives a visual balance to the whole place and at the same time provides an imaginary sense of closure that starts in a straight line towards the clock tower.
Al extremo noroeste de la Plaza podremos encontrar una figura de forma algo abstracta, se trata de una escultura de la importante artista venezolano Francisco Narv谩ez, quien en 1954 forjar铆an bronce esta imponente obra de arte, inicialmente para ser colocado en los premios de la Biblioteca Central, pero gracias al devenir del destino termin贸 siendo instalada en este lugar de la plaza, lo cual realmente me parece una muy buena idea, ya que permite darle un equilibrio visual a todo el lugar y al mismo tiempo brinda una sensaci贸n imaginaria de cierre que parte en l铆nea recta hacia la torre del reloj.
Around the time of the inauguration of the Plaza Francisco Narv谩ez a new piece was also added to this space, a commemorative bust of Doctor Jos茅 Mar铆a Vargas, an illustrious character who figures in Venezuelan history as the first rector of this university, and whose research related to the death of the liberator and a truly impeccable career have given him a place of honour among the Venezuelans who have contributed elements of incalculable value to their country.
M谩s o menos para el momento de la inauguraci贸n de la Plaza Francisco Narv谩ez tambi茅n le aporta este espacio una nueva pieza, se trata de un busto conmemorativo del Doctor Jos茅 Mar铆a Vargas, un personaje ilustre que figura en la historia venezolana como el primer rector de esta casa de estudios, adem谩s sus investigaciones relacionadas con la muerte del libertador y una carrera realmente impecable lo alzan en un sitio al de honor entre los venezolanos que le han aportado a su pa铆s elementos de incalculable valor.
On the buildings that enclose the east and west wings of the square we can find several murals by world-renowned artists, where we can discover names such as Armando Barrios and Osvaldo Vigas, two exponents of Venezuelan modern art, who undoubtedly made an incalculable contribution to this project of the University City of Caracas and who today pass into eternity with works that are considered by the world as patrimonies of humanity.
Sobre los edificios que encierran las alas este y oeste de la plaza podremos encontrar varios murales de artistas mundialmente reconocidos, en donde podremos descubrir nombres como los de Armando Barrios, Osvaldo Vigas, dos exponentes del arte moderno venezolano, tiene sin duda alguna le hicieron un aporte incalculable a este proyecto de la Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas y que hoy en d铆a pasan a la eternidad con obras que son consideradas por el mundo como patrimonios de la humanidad.
This is a square of mixed feelings, at first glance it may seem large, inhospitable and empty, it is certainly not a place to go and sit and spend some time, but rather a transit area, in a space of the city that does not usually have much pedestrian flow. In other words, it is a somewhat contradictory place, where it might seem to the visitor that it is a meaningless area, but those of us who have had the opportunity to study here know that its significance transcends the trivialities of everyday life.
Esta es una Plaza de Sentimientos encontrados, a primera vista puede parecer grande, inh贸spita y vac铆a, sin duda alguna no es un lugar para ir a sentarse y pasar un rato, m谩s bien es un 谩rea de tr谩nsito, en un espacio de la ciudad que no suele tener mucho flujo peatonal. Es decir, se trata de un lugar un tanto contradictorio, en donde al visitante le pudiera parecer que se trata de un 谩rea que carece de sentido, pero los que tuvimos la oportunidad de estudiar ac谩, sabemos que su significado trasciende a las trivialidades de la cotidianidad.
During my time as a student I did not understand the real value of this space on campus, but as I approached the final semesters of my university career, I discovered the true meaning of the Rector's Square. Once you enter the Aula Magna as a Bachelor and leave as a Professional, the first thing you want to do is run towards that enormous Plaza and feel like you own the world, take a photo that will remain in your memory, jump to the rhythm of every bell of the clock and laugh to exhaustion looking at the satisfied faces of your classmates, the look of pride of your family and the genuine joy of those professors who for years saw you as their own children.
Durante mi 茅poca como estudiante no entend铆a el valor real de este espacio dentro del campus, Pero a medida que me acercaba los semestres finales de mi carrera universitaria, fui descubriendo el verdadero sentido de la Plaza del Rectorado. Una vez ingresas al Aula Magna como Bachiller y sales como Profesional, lo primero que quieres hacer es correr hacia esa enorme Plaza y sentirte due帽o del mundo, tomarte una foto que quede para el recuerdo, saltar al ritmo de cada campana del reloj y re铆r hasta el cansancio mirando el rostro de satisfacci贸n de los compa帽eros, la mirada de orgullo de nuestra familia y la genuina alegr铆a de aquellos profesores que durante a帽os nos vieron como sus propios hijos.
The Plaza del Rectorado is a tremendously important place, it is a space that comes to life with each graduation ceremony, it is an area where we all dream of being with our caps and gowns, wearing our medals and opening our degrees, it is that space that you cannot miss if you visit the city of Caracas, because it is here where a better future is built, where dreams are fulfilled and where joy and happiness are perpetuated through time.
La Plaza del Rectorado es un lugar tremendamente importante, es un espacio que cobra vida con cada acto de grado, es un 谩rea donde todos so帽amos estar con todo y birrete, luciendo nuestras medallas y abriendo nuestro t铆tulo, es ese espacio que no puedes dejar de conocer si visitas a la ciudad de Caracas, porque es aqu铆 en donde se construye un mejor futuro, en donde se cumplen los sue帽os y en donde la alegr铆a y la felicidad se perpet煤an a trav茅s del tiempo.
