The ambiance of the place was just perfect for what we came to do, nothing too loud, nothing too serious, just calm and open. Me and my group of friends, we’ve been together for like 7 to 8 years now since secondary school, so anytime we link up it feels like no time has passed. We picked this outdoor spot with artificial green grass, black wicker chairs and glass tables under a covered area. The sun was hitting nicely, casting long shadows across the grass, and there was a bit of breeze too. Hanging plants were on the pillars and the fence around had that decorative pattern. In the background you could hear faint music and people talking at other tables, but our corner was ours. We just sat down, ordered some drinks, and let the gist flow naturally.
What made it sweet was how comfortable everybody was. Nobody was on phone too much, nobody was rushing. We were just sipping our drinks, laughing, and dragging each other like we used to back then. I remember saying how I used to be class prefect and everyone started shouting "ah you and your prefect wahala". They were reminding me how I’d be the one to go and report people to teachers, and how teachers would always call me first anytime they needed help. I told them how some teachers would even confide in me like "help me mark this" or "tell the class to keep quiet". We laughed about it because back then it felt like a big deal, but now it’s just funny stories we use to roast each other.
Then the conversation shifted to school generally and we started going down memory lane. We were talking about how we used to write tests together, how one person would finish first and pass answers with leg or with paper. Someone brought up how we’d beg teachers to shift test dates and how we’d all act innocent in front of them. Another person said "remember when we were copying notes and the teacher caught us" and we all burst out laughing. It’s crazy how those small things that stressed us in school are now the things we miss the most. Even the punishments, the morning assemblies, the uniform checks, everything just came back like it was yesterday. We weren’t trying to be deep, we were just gisting, but the nostalgia hit different.
The place itself added to the vibe. The green grass made it feel relaxed, like we were outside but still chill. The tables were spaced out so we had our privacy, and the wicker furniture made it feel casual, not too formal. You could see other people around too, some families, some other friend groups, but we were in our own world. Drinks were coming in intervals, and with each one the gist got longer and louder. We talked about work, about life after school, about other friends who couldn’t make it. But most of the time we kept coming back to school days because that’s where our bond started. 7 to 8 years is not small, we’ve seen each other grow from boys in uniform to people trying to figure out life.
By the time we were done, the sun was already going down and the place was getting that golden evening light. We didn’t even realize how much time had passed because we were just talking and laughing non-stop. That’s what I love about moments like this. It’s not about fancy places or big plans, it’s just about being with people who knew you from the beginning. We left that spot feeling lighter, like we had poured out everything we had been holding in. Same gist, same jokes, same energy we had in SS1 till now. Honestly, links like this are rare and I’m glad we still make time for them.
