Trip to La Candelaria [ESP/ENG]

Todos los viajes a la Candelaria los hacemos muy temprano en la mañana, en vehículos de doble tracción. El viaje es largo porque transitamos por asfalto y tierra.

All trips to La Candelaria are made very early in the morning, in four-wheel drive vehicles. The trip is long because we travel on asphalt and dirt.

La primera parte del recorrido la hacemos desde Maracay, estado Aragua, Norte de Venezuela, donde vivimos, hasta el pueblo de Salom, estado Yaracuy. Entre esos dos puntos el trayecto dura un poco más de dos horas. Una parte lo hacemos por la autopista Regional del Centro y otro por la carretera hacia Occidente.

The first part of the trip we do from Maracay, Aragua State, North of Venezuela, where we live, to the town of Salom, Yaracuy State. Between those two points the trip takes a little more than two hours. One part we do it by the Regional Highway of the Center and the other by the road to the West.

En el pueblo de Salom completamos la compra de algunos víveres, desayunamos y comenzamos el ascenso de la montaña, por una estrecha y accidentada carretera de tierra. Allí nos tardamos una hora más para llegar hasta el caserío.

In the town of Salom we complete the purchase of some food, have breakfast and begin the ascent of the mountain, through a narrow and rough dirt road. There we took another hour to reach the farmhouse.

Llegar a la Candelaria es como hacer un viaje al pasado. Las costumbres de la zona son más bien de otro tiempo. Los pocos habitantes del sector se dedican a la agricultura y la cría de ganado, llevan una vida muy sencilla, son gente amable y disfrutan escuchando las novedades que les llevan los visitantes.

Arriving at La Candelaria is like taking a trip to the past. The customs of the area are rather from another time. The few inhabitants of the area are dedicated to agriculture and cattle breeding, they lead a very simple life, are friendly people and enjoy listening to the news that visitors bring them.

En la zona no hay servicios de electricidad y la telefonía móvil funciona con limitaciones. La población es relativamente escasa, vive muy dispersa en pequeñas casas que se encuentran bastante separadas unas de otras a lo largo de la montaña.

There are no electricity services in the area and cell phones work with limitations. The population is relatively sparse, living very scattered in small houses that are quite separated from each other along the mountain.

A los que llegamos de la ciudad nos da la impresión que el tiempo transcurre lentamente. Es el primer efecto de estar sin TV y celular. Al principio uno echa de menos la presencia de esos artefactos. Pero la belleza del ambiente natural de la zona hace que en muy poco tiempo las comodidades de la ciudad pasen a un segundo plano.

Those of us who come from the city have the impression that time passes slowly. This is the first effect of being without TV and cell phone. At first one misses the presence of these artifacts. But the beauty of the natural environment of the area means that in a very short time the comforts of the city take a back seat.

El clima de la Candelaria es muy agradable, en algunos momentos llega a ser bastante frío. Es muy frecuente la presencia de una densa neblina sobre todo en las tardes y el amanecer. En las noches, cuando hay tiempo despejado, es posible disfrutar de un cielo completamente libre de contaminación lumínica, en el que se puede disfrutar la vista de millones de estrellas.

The climate of La Candelaria is very pleasant, at some moments it becomes quite cold. It is very frequent the presence of a dense fog especially in the afternoons and at dawn. At night, when the weather is clear, it is possible to enjoy a sky completely free of light pollution, where you can enjoy the view of millions of stars.

Nuestros viajes los hacemos en grandes grupos de amigos y familiares. Allí pasamos unos días reencontrándonos, comentando sobre la marcha de la vida en cada una de nuestras familias.

We make our trips in large groups of friends and family. There we spend a few days meeting again, commenting on the progress of life in each of our families.

Los niños disfrutan mucho del ambiente campestre de la zona, se interesan por las actividades del campo, exploran el entorno, aprenden a montar caballo, los secretos del arte de cultivar la tierra, el ordeño de las vacas y van comprendiendo el valor de conservar la naturaleza. De igual forma las historias de los lugareños le sirven para entender la diferencia que hay entre los grupos humanos que habitamos en el país.

The children enjoy the country atmosphere of the area, they are interested in the activities of the countryside, they explore the surroundings, they learn to ride horses, the secrets of the art of cultivating the land, the milking of the cows and they understand the value of conserving nature. In the same way, the stories of the locals help you understand the difference between the human groups that live in the country.

La zona no ha sido concebida como destino turístico. Sin embargo, el interesado en visitarla puede conseguir alojamiento en el pueblo de Salom o en la cercana ciudad de Nirgua. Desde allí siempre hay quien viaje a hacia la montaña y es bastante probable que haciendo algunos arreglos se pueda conseguir alquilar una pequeña casa para pasar unos días. Para los amantes de la vida del campo, este es un sitio ideal.

The area has not been conceived as a tourist destination. However, those interested in visiting it can get accommodation in the town of Salom or in the nearby city of Nirgua. From there there are always those who travel to the mountains and it is quite probable that by making some arrangements you can get to rent a small house to spend a few days. For lovers of country life, this is an ideal place.
