In my house we have the habit of putting a padlock on the inside of the gate. We think that in that way our vehicles are more protected, since if they break the lock from the outside they will not be able to open that door. Perhaps this is an unjustified measure, since in the more than forty years we have been in the area they have never tried to pick the lock, but as my mother says... You never know....
But besides increasing our sense of security that lock has come to fulfill another very important function, it alerts us about sedentary lifestyles. Let me explain...
As the years go by, my wife and I spend more time indoors. When the children lived with us we always had to go out to take them to school, high school, sports or any activity related to them.
But now that we are both retired and live alone we have developed a series of routines that we do indoors, we read, write, meditate... So it is very easy for us to neglect ourselves and, without realizing it, we spend our days without going out, something we have always considered inconvenient. And that's where the padlock comes in...
Every afternoon my wife and I sit on the porch drinking coffee. At that time I always look towards the gate for the sign of our activity...
If the padlock is not on it means that things are going well, both she and I have completed our walking routine, we have gone out to chat with the neighbors, or simply to get some fresh air... If it is the opposite and the padlock is on, then the alarm bells go off inside me. In that case the first thing I do is ask my wife how long it has been since we have been out... If it has been more than two days, we immediately make a plan to go out...
On one of these recent outings, after receiving the padlock alarm, I found a pleasant surprise in Maracay, the city where I live. A large downtown area was occupied by an exhibition called "Art is in the Street".
The exhibition consisted of sculptures of different formats, posters drawn by national artists and large paintings on the screens of the lighting poles, which also serve to give some shade to walkers.
The motifs of the works were abstract and figurative, there were representations of the native culture, animals and flowers emblematic of our tropical fauna and flora.
We spent a long time walking around and appreciating these creations; then we sat down to have a coffee and talk about the experience. Both my wife and I found that little walk energizing and refreshing...
As we get older we become lazy to go outside, this is something that could be considered relatively normal...
It is true that our energy is not the same, that maybe our feet hurt and that is why we prefer to walk less. It may also happen that we need to go to the toilet more urgently and we try not to go far, or simply that our visual acuity has decreased and we only feel safe driving on certain types of roads and at certain times of the day.
However, going outdoors can also be considered a necessity. And it is not only for the benefit of receiving sunlight, which is essential to keep our metabolic systems functioning, all doctors recommend careful exposure to the sun. It is also that this contact with others, with life that continues its course, fills us with energy. Knowing that we are still immersed in the dynamics of the world is highly satisfying and invigorating.
If you are getting older, pay attention to the sedentary times, don't be careless about it. Sitting still without exploring the world is counterproductive.
We will always have the opportunity to take even a small walk...We will always have the opportunity to marvel at any small discovery...It is always invigorating to feel the energy of life that is out there...
