Saludos.
Greetings. Friend @emiliorios in his column for the
@beentrepreneur community leaves us a series of reflections on how difficult it is to arrive at the right choice. Let me tell you...
In all our daily activities we have to make choices, this is particularly noticeable when we are involved in the world of entrepreneurship.
The first thing to consider is that every choice involves taking some risk, this is not a minor issue and we must take into account. It is not easy to decide, for example, to leave our condition of employees to open our own way on our own account. Here the risk of going from a situation of security to one of uncertainty is real, it is not a lie that things can turn out contrary to what we have thought and then we will be worse off than before...
But should we let fear paralyze us and leave us anchored forever in a situation that is not entirely beneficial or pleasant for us? No. We always have the possibility of rationally evaluating every aspect of the new situation in order to minimize the risks of failure.
If we are going to undertake a new activity it is important to take some time to gather all the available information, and here we must be patient not to rush things, it is preferable to postpone the start of a business than to do it without having made an exhaustive evaluation of all the variables that can affect it. It is also advisable to seek advice from an expert who can broaden the repertoire of aspects to be considered. That way we minimize the risk and we will have a better chance of getting things right.
Recently a friend of mine asked me for an opinion about a video game business he wanted to set up in my area. His initial idea was to make a major investment with large monitors, state-of-the-art chairs and the like. He wanted to do something similar to some arcades that were in two shopping malls in the city.
At first the idea looked very attractive and he was very enthusiastic. However, because of my knowledge of the area, the first thing I asked him was if he had done any market research. To my surprise he said no, all his enthusiasm was based on what he had seen in the malls, where the businesses always had a good clientele.
He thought that if it worked well in those places it could also work here. His strongest reason was that people would not have to move far away to enjoy a space like the one he was going to offer them.
I told him about my doubts, I did not see that there was enough demand for a business like that, the young people in the area are not many and those that exist have little purchasing power. He replied that the games were not only attractive to young people but also to some adults. He was right about that too. But I still thought that there was no market for this business.
In the end he considered my doubt reasonable. He decided to do a test, he would start with a smaller investment, in a smaller place and with few equipment. If it worked, he would look for a bigger place and equip it better.
That decision wasn't all bad. I knew I was taking a calculated risk. We can never know in advance that something is not going to work, you have to take a step.
For three months my friend kept his video game business, in that time he was able to evaluate that the market was not enough to give him the profitability he expected and decided to close it. He did lose some of his capital, but much less than if he had followed his initial plan.
A short time later, my friend showed up again to consult me about another project related to the sale of spices. He told me that in this case he had taken a better look at the potential of the market. I agreed with him, that idea had more prospects.
He has been running this new business for a few months now and things are going well. He is satisfied with the results.
Sometimes we start our ventures driven more by passion than by reasoning. Passion is indispensable because it gives us the necessary impulse to take the risk, but we must not blind ourselves to the evidence that reason gives us.
Thank you for your time.
