Saludos.
Greetings. Our friend @mosa71 leaves us in her column an interesting initiative to reflect on those behaviors that take us away from wellness.
Ever since I became interested in these topics of personal growth, I have been struck by how easy it is to do the opposite of what is good for us, even when it seems like common sense. My father used to say that it was the least common sense and he was quite right.
I must admit that I find it hard to understand the reasons why the culture, I am talking about mine, the Venezuelan culture, so easily cultivates a series of beliefs and aptitudes that make life more difficult for us. We learn a number of things that later are quite difficult to change.
The three problems that leave us with the initiative are about these issues.
Tendency to negativity
It has taken me a long time to recognize my tendency to negative thinking. Realizing this has not been easy because in some way it goes against a certain predisposition to give answers of this type...
I have had to be very attentive to my thinking to become aware that the first responses that come to me are negative. It is automatic, what emerges naturally from the depths of the unconscious. It is not easy to know how those answers got there until they constitute a mud floor. But undoubtedly it has to do with issues learned in the infantile years, because I doubt that at the moment of being born they arrived with me.
The important thing is that I am quite clear about the presence of this cognitive bias and I am determined to seek equanimity. And it is by no means a matter of shifting to the other extreme and starting to see everything rosy knowing that there are also dark shades. It's about seeing things with balance. There is the good and the not so good. But there is no doubt that if we learn to value the positive in life, things feel lighter and we can live better.
Tendency to be an ambulance
Since I was a child I learned the importance of solidarity, of lending our help to others. I am one of those who think that the purpose of life is to improve the world we receive and that necessarily implies sharing and assisting others.
But one thing is solidarity and another is to assume that the solution to the affairs of others is in our hands. No, it is not like that. Yes, we can guide and assist in case of need, but that is as far as it goes. We cannot live the lives of others, not even those closest to us, such as our children and grandchildren.
This is also an issue that has been very difficult for me to understand. For a long time, I was very anxious about other people's problems, and this caused me a great emotional and psychic wear and tear. Step by step I came to understand that there are things that are completely beyond my control and that not even with the greatest goodwill will they be solved.
This does not mean that I have become insensitive or indifferent. Of course I am affected by the problems of the environment, the poverty of others, the drama of emigration, of which I have my own share. But there are things that escape me and the healthiest thing to do is to accept that this is so. My children and granddaughters have to live their own lives. I cannot manage it for them.
I tend to give priority to what people will say.
Our way of life is sharing with others, so it is inevitable to come up against other people's opinions. There will always be someone who will talk about us, for better or worse.
This situation was less problematic in the time before the Internet, when those who talked about you were basically your acquaintances. But now with social networks anyone can tell you whatever they want without any kind of treatment, often just to be annoying. It's not easy to learn to live with that. You have to have a thick skin to not be affected by opinions of any caliber.
The opinions of others can enrich us as people because they can illuminate our dark areas. The ego sometimes does not allow us to become aware of our defects and it is through the gaze of others that we realize that these defects are there. However, it is not healthy to live thinking about what others will say; this can paralyze us and limit us from undertaking any project.
In HIVE, for example, we are always exposed to public scrutiny. Someone will always have an opinion about our content. Should that matter...?
Some time ago I made the decision to write for myself, to feel satisfied with my writing. I write with the intention of getting something out that I need to say. It may or may not be useful to someone. But doing them without thinking that they are aimed at a particular reader gives me some relief. Otherwise I think I'd have a hard time writing, because I'd be under pressure as to whether it's going to be liked or not. Of course, a positive comment always stimulates me to continue. And I appreciate and value them greatly.
As always I have enjoyed writing the publication. I thank friend @moza71 for this great initiative.
Thanks for your time.
