Como otras ciudades cubanas, caracterizadas por su colindancia con el mar, mermó el interés sobre Puerto Padre a la llegada del ferricarril y la carretera central, en tanto los puertos pasaron a ser viejos espigones perdidos en el mar.
De Puerto Padre aún se escucha hablar del Puerto Carupano, dedicado a transportar el azúcar de Cuba.
A los que amamos el azul del cielo y la brisa del amanecer salpicada de sal, pues elegimos a Puerto Padre y sus playas de arenas blancas. Una de ellas es Covarrubias, playa virgen donde fue construido un pequeño hotel para el turismo. Otras playas para los turistas nacionales son La Boca y Punta Corella.
Además Puerto Padre tiene un espacio importante en la historia, hace treinta años un grupo de jóvenes se unieron para estudiar la geografía de las costas del norte de Cuba, lanzando la siguiente teoría: Cristóbal Colón desembarcó por Puerto Padre.
Un puerto, Padre, dicen que fue la frase de uno de los navegantes al ver tierra. Los jóvenes investigadores dejaron plantada la teoría, retomada por Reymundo Betancourt, quien en cinco tomos demuestra que el Almirante Cristóbal Colón entró por Puerto Padre en 1492.

La historia de Puerto Padre es apasionante, pude verlo cuando me acerque a estudiar el patrimonio musical de esta región. Me encontré con muchas agrupaciones como La Banda de Conciertos de Puerto Padre fundada en 1924, fue la escuela de grandes músicos que marcaron una historia musical. Luis Ignacio Diaz fue el primer director y heredó la misma de su padre, un militar español que llegó a Cuba con la colonización. 109 años está cumpliendo esta agrupación.
Otra de las emblemáticas orquesta es Embajadores del Ritmo en sus inicios se llamó Ritmo Perverso. La dirigió Emiliano Salvador Sr y luego Emiliano Salvador, hijo cuya obra está inscrita entre los fundadores del Jazz Latino, formando parte además de la Banda de Experimentación Sonora del ICAIC.
