The Décima in Las Tunas: Intangible Heritage

A greeting to the friends of #Hive, especially to this community @CelfMagazine, lover of art and culture.

These days the city is celebrating its founding dates, and among the commemorative activities, the décima is present.

The Las Tunas Culture Week and the Hispano-American Décima Week come together this year in a tribute that transcends borders. Both events, dedicated to the memory of Jesús Orta Ruiz, El Indio Naborí, one of the greatest exponents of the décima in Cuba, celebrate not only the Las Tunas Culture Week, but also the legacy of a poet who transformed the peasant stanza into an art of universal reach.

The Ibero-American House of the Décima, together with the Provincial Heritage Center and the Provincial Museum Mayor General Vicente García, have organized an exhibition that highlights the most genuine photographic memories about the décima and its indissoluble link with Las Tunas culture.

The opening of the exhibition was led by Luis Castillo and the Dúo Punto Cubano, who delighted those present with the performance of a country tune, thus recalling the essence of the traditional guateque that gave rise to these celebrations.

Among those attending were personalities such as Iliana Bascomb Núñez and Ramón Batista, together with a young audience and artists who love culture, which demonstrates the continued relevance and deep roots of the décima in the new generations.

In this context, the figure of El Indio Naborí acquires special relevance. Born in 1922 and died in 2005, Jesús Orta Ruiz was a poet, journalist, and literary researcher, and his work renewed both sung and written décima, raising improvised verse to levels of artistic excellence.

His pseudonym, which he adopted from a very young age, reflects his deep connection with humble roots and his commitment to the most popular strata of society.

El Indio Naborí was not only an exceptional cultivator of the décima, but also a bridge between rural oral tradition and learned poetry. His style, influenced by vanguardism and neopopularism, incorporated bold metaphors and a formal craftsmanship that enriched the octosyllable without losing its popular essence.

He was a founder of the Jornadas Cucalambeanas and a tireless defender of Cuban punto, that genre that UNESCO has recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The Ibero-American House of the Décima, based in Las Tunas since 2005, is the natural home of these celebrations. Throughout the year it promotes gatherings, workshops, and recitals that keep alive the flame of improvisation and oral poetry. Every September 30, Hispano-American Décima Day, the institution pays tribute to El Indio Naborí with sung performances and tributes that reaffirm his legacy.

Thus, among tunes, improvised décimas, and the memory of the master, Las Tunas consolidates itself as the Ibero-American capital of the décima, a space where tradition is renewed and the memory of El Indio Naborí continues to inspire those who see in improvised verse the most authentic voice of the people. You are invited to this special exhibition From a Deep Viewpoint, in the rooms of the Vicente García Provincial Museum.
