Esta planta es muy querida por mi madre, ha tenido diferentes etapas desde que en 2013 traje la peque帽a maceta con una begonia nelumbifolia, solo el tama帽o de las hojas era impresionante y ella la sembr贸 en una olla vieja. Luego ha sido resembrada y aqu铆 est谩 quiz谩s, en su d茅cima generaci贸n. Es de las cosas m谩s hermosas que he visto por estos d铆as.
La begonia nelumbifolia es una de las especies m谩s llamativas del g茅nero Begonia, es m谩s conocida en M茅xico. Su nombre alude a la similitud de sus hojas con las del loto, tanto por su forma como por su disposici贸n. Esta planta herb谩cea, que habita en suelos h煤medos y sombreados cerca de arroyos o cascadas, desarrolla un porte escultural que la hace muy apreciada en jardiner铆a.
El rasgo m谩s distintivo son sus enormes hojas, con el pec铆olo insertado en el centro, a la manera de un paraguas. Cada hoja puede alcanzar un di谩metro de entre 30 y 45 cent铆metros, sostenida por un tallo grueso y suculento. La l谩mina es de un verde intenso y brillante mientras que el env茅s suele presentar tonalidades rojizas y una vellosidad suave.
Esta estructura permite que el agua de lluvia se acumule en el centro sin da帽ar la planta, formando peque帽as charcas ef铆meras. Algo que me llama la atenci贸n es su tallo va perdiendo las hojas y se va enroscando.
En cuanto a su floraci贸n, la begonia nelumbifolia produce ramilletes que emergen por encima del follaje. Parece un ramillete de novia. Las inflorescencias est谩 compuestas por numerosas flores peque帽as de color blanco o rosa p谩lido. Como en todas las begonias, las flores son unisexuales; las masculinas lucen cuatro p茅talos y las femeninas, cinco.
La floraci贸n suele ocurrir en los meses m谩s h煤medos del a帽o, atrayendo a polinizadores como abejas y mariposas. Adem谩s de su valor ornamental, esta begonia juega un papel ecol贸gico importante al retener humedad y proporcionar refugio a peque帽os animalitos como lombrisillas y ciempies.
Esta planta se extiende cada vez m谩s, donde sus majestuosas hojas y delicadas flores aportan un toque ex贸tico y selv谩tico justo en el frente de la casa. Mi madre teme que alguien quiera llevarsela, para inmortalizarla dej茅 sus fotos por aqu铆. De todos modos dentro dd unos d铆as pierde sus flores y entra en nuevo ciclo vital.

My Mother's Begonia

This plant is very dear to my mother. It has gone through different stages since 2013 when I brought the small pot with a Begonia nelumbifolia; just the size of the leaves was impressive, and she planted it in an old pot. It has since been replanted, and here it is, perhaps in its tenth generation. It is one of the most beautiful things I have seen these days.
The Begonia nelumbifolia is one of the most striking species of the Begonia genus, better known in Mexico. Its name alludes to the similarity of its leaves to those of the lotus, both in shape and arrangement. This herbaceous plant, which inhabits humid and shady soils near streams or waterfalls, develops a sculptural bearing that makes it highly prized in gardening.
Its most distinctive feature is its enormous leaves, with the petiole inserted in the center, like an umbrella. Each leaf can reach a diameter of between 30 and 45 centimeters, held by a thick, succulent stem. The blade is an intense, bright green, while the underside usually has reddish tones and a soft fuzz.
This structure allows rainwater to collect in the center without damaging the plant, forming small, ephemeral puddles. Something that catches my attention is that its stem gradually loses its leaves and coils up.
Regarding its flowering, the Begonia nelumbifolia produces clusters that emerge above the foliage. It looks like a bridal bouquet. The inflorescences are composed of numerous small white or pale pink flowers. As in all begonias, the flowers are unisexual; the male ones have four petals and the female ones, five.
Flowering usually occurs in the wettest months of the year, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Besides its ornamental value, this begonia plays an important ecological role by retaining moisture and providing shelter for small creatures like earthworms and centipedes.
This plant spreads more and more, its majestic leaves and delicate flowers adding an exotic, jungle-like touch right in front of the house. My mother fears that someone might want to take it away. To immortalize it, I left its photos here. Anyway, within a few days it will lose its flowers and enter a new life cycle.
