#TBT Contest: One Photo. One Story. One of These Days. Youth is Always Beautiful.
*To my #tbt friends, I wish you well-being and health.
There are moments when memories begin to fade, like the colors of this old photograph I share with you today. My university days remain etched in me, but time, relentless, slowly erases details, just as the lines and tones of this image gradually blend into a sigh.
It was 1992 when our Art History group gathered in front of the library to take this casual, spontaneous, unpretentious photo. Those friends standing with me were my refuge and my awakening during those years full of discoveries. Each of them left me with lessons and companionship that I still carry tattooed on my soul. The photo came into my hands thanks to the group El Reencuentro ("The Reunion"), formed by the same people in this image, which is now 33 years old.
Looking at ourselves today is witnessing the passage of time in its purest form. Our lives have changed in every way, but there we were, enduring one of the hardest periods in our island’s history. The shortages—of food, clothing, and so much more—are hinted at in our gazes and the simplicity of our clothes. Yet youth, with its own light, made us beautiful. Dreams and hope never abandoned us; they were the fuel that kept us going, even when everything seemed to crumble.
Can you recognize me? I’m in the center, a few pounds lighter, wearing one of those outfits lovingly handmade by my mother, made from that fabric called Telarte. Even I’m surprised to see myself there, in the middle, always so shy. Maybe it was the magnetism of that group, the bond we shared, that placed me there without me even seeking it.
Today, as I look at this photo, I don’t just see faces—I see intertwined stories. I hear the laughter that slipped between classes, the endless study nights, the conversations that shaped our thinking. I see the love for art, for history, for that tireless search for meaning. And though the details may blur, what remains is the certainty that those years made us who we are.
This image is more than a memory; it’s a silent witness to a time when, despite the shadows, we knew how to find the light. To my companions from back then, wherever you are, I say we’re still here, carrying each other in that corner of the soul where time doesn’t pass—it transforms into eternity.
