For many years now, a neighbor's cat has been living in my house. She comes here because she isn't given enough food. The saddest thing is that I've never been able to adopt her because she has an owner and even then she hasn't been spayed, so she frequently has a new litter of kittens. We've done our best, but they're raised in an environment between that yard and the street, which is why they tend to act a bit wild. Sometimes they're adopted, other times they aren't. We give them food when we can, but if we try to catch them, they run away. This time we caught one, and I'm trying to get it to adapt to us so we can properly adopt it.
The main problem is that since the mother comes and goes into our yard, the cat keeps clinging to the mother to nurse him, even though she sometimes violently rejects him. So when she goes back outside to go to the neighbor's yard, the kitten also follows her. We've put a board under the door and covered all the holes, but sometimes he comes back to her somehow. We're giving him food, and he's lost some of his fear, but he's still somewhat wild.
This week we made a significant breakthrough, so I was able to give him a bath with cat shampoo that contains insecticide for fleas and lice. Since the cat is black, I couldn't see if he had any while I was bathing him, but I had seen him scratching himself before, so I assume he got them from his mother. However, it's hard to stop him from getting them when she always comes here to look for food, and we can't catch her. The other thing is that the kitten's eyes are a little sore, so we applied an antibiotic eye cream, hoping he gets better soon. I really don't want him to escape again. I want him to get used to us so we can give him love and care. It makes me very sad to think that we won't make it, but I'm trying to stay positive.
