Some stages of childhood development seem to be a test of the parental's endurance. Some of those kids really make strangers wonder how they survive to adulthood. Just one of those stages is the discovery of jokes.
"Hey... hey... hey... hey...? Why do beans like to live in Queensland, Australia?"
Temporary Guardian Thorx anticipated more of the continuing verbal trouble that had been going on for a subjective eternity[1]. "This isn't another banana one is it?"
Human Dee grinned, showing deciduous teeth. "No..." the mischief was clear in their tone. This was not a factual inquiry. In fact, there had been no factual inquiries since Human Dee asked about chickens crossing roads.
Thorx sighed. "I do not know why legumes live in Queensland, Australia."
"Cause they like to stay in CAIRNS!"
Ah. Phonetic parallels. The sooner this child was delivered to someone who could stand them, the better.
"Why did the monkey cross the road?"
Thorx thought about this. "Was it glued to the dinosaur from a previous joke?"
Dee cackled. "No, it evolved from the dinosaur!"
This was supposed to be a three-hour journey. How was it lasting for what felt like three months?"
"How do you get an elephant inside a refrigerator?"
[1] For any who doubt the relativity of the passage of time, arrive early for a dental or doctor's appointment and sit next to someone who won't shut up about a subject you have zero interest in.
