Today we discuss punishments in schools, I will be sharing few of my experiences as a student.
I think punishments have come a long way from the ones I experienced in the 80's and 90's schooling in Mumbai, India. I may be wrong though.
The first question arises, do punishments be allowed in schools?
if yes, then to what level it is ok for a teacher to punish a student for misbehaving or not doing homework.
I think, teachers should be allowed to punish the students.
But, punishments should be more constructive. Detentions are not always the best way.
Ok, winding back to 80's and 90's.
I was a very quiet and shy boy in class but, I did have my share of punishments during my school days.
Mostly, the punishments were for odd behaviour / being mischievious or not doing the assigned work. But few I got for being in the wrong place.
We did not have a concept of detention.
The general punishments were:
Stand on the bench
This is a standard one and may be followed today. But not a convenient one, as in my school a bench is shared by 3/4 students in a class of 50+
Stand outside the class.
It's a risky one as my principal/headmaster generally use to do rounds, if seen outside the class you will be asked to call your parents.
That's double edged sword you are playing with.
Being hit with a stick or a hard ruler.
That was use very often by few teachers.
Shouting during an assembly was not a good thing to do. I remember getting hit by a stick.
One day, the whole class was making noise and teacher got fed-up and decided to punish everyone in the class by hitting everyone with a hard ruler on their hands.
I was the first person sitting on the first row and that was also not my original place, i had switched my place with my friend.
Well I was the only person to get hit that day. She stopped after that. I guess the class got the message :-)
Twisting of arm and hit/punch on the back.
There was one particular teacher who use to do that. Heavy built guy with one false eye, I am serious. He later became the principal of the school.
Pulling of ears or holding your arm and pinching it.
One of the teachers use to do that. I don't remember the pulling of ears, but surely recollect the pinch on the arms.
Become a Murgha
This is one of the common punishments in indian schools.
Murgha means a chicken. To get into the position bend forward and your face touching your knees.
Grab your ears by passing your hands around the legs from behind.

Looks easy, but it gets exhausting over a period of time for your thigh and calf muscles.
I had a few of those during my time.
Write a sentence X number of times on a piece of paper
This one is my favourite. I got them mostly for not doing the homework.
If you have seen Simpsons, it is similar to what Bart does. He writes on the blackboard, we did it on paper.

I remember a funny incident where my friend was told to write the punishment 100 times on a paper.
He asked his 4 friends to help him out by writing 20 times.
They did and he gave it back to the teacher. But the teacher found out and all the 5 had to write 200 more times :-)
The handwritings and the pages taken from the book did not match. :-)
