I went to a wedding a few years back. Beautiful by every visible measure. The photos looked extraordinary. Every detail considered and executed. The couple glowing. The guests genuinely happy to be there celebrating something that looked from the outside like two people at the beginning of a perfect chapter.
The couple separated fourteen months later.
I am not telling that story to be cynical about love or weddings. I am telling it because i was at that wedding feeling quietly inadequate about my own life, comparing the private reality of my ordinary days to the curated peak of someone else's, and the comparison was built on almost no accurate information.
That is what the highlight reel does. It gives you someone else's best moments to hold up against your own average ones, which is a comparison so structurally unfair it should be obviously meaningless. But it does not feel meaningless. It feels like evidence. Like everyone else is living at a level of beauty and success and relationship quality that you are somehow missing.
And then you find out something real about one of the people whose life looked best from the outside and the whole framework cracks for a moment. You remember briefly that the image is not the reality. Then you forget and go back to comparing anyway because the images are constant and the reminders are occasional.
I do not think the answer is cynicism. Not assuming everyone's highlight is secretly miserable underneath. Some people genuinely are doing well and their images reflect something real.
The answer is probably just using the images less as reference points for your own life. Letting them exist without holding them up against your private reality. Remembering that what you are seeing was chosen, filtered, timed, and presented, and that the unfiltered version of every life contains far more ordinary and hard and unglamorous material than any curated feed would suggest.
Your life is not behind anyone else's. You are comparing the wrong things.
