Hi there. In this education post, I cover the idea that access to good schools is not possible sometimes for some households.
Many families choose schools that are near them. In terms of travel time, 5 to 10 minutes of travel to school by car is good. Some kids may walk to school. Walking is good exercise, cheaper but takes longer.
Some families may send their kids to a good school that is farther away. The travel time would be longer but the school would be better. Better as in nicer classrooms and a higher teaching level.
Those with lower income neighbourhoods may not have great schools near them. The families may not have a car available for the parents to send their kids to school. A school bus or public transit would be used. Schools in not so good neighbourhoods may not have good teachers or even well behaved fellow students.
A lot of good parents out there want their kids to do well. Good schools can be expensive from grades 1 to 8 and even the college/university years.
In the Toronto area, public schools are funded by taxpayer dollars. Public schools are typically free or have low cost registration fees. There are some good public schools that prepare students for post secondary education. These schools could be IB accredited or not.
Private schools are mostly for those who have money and are willing to pay a lot of money to send their kids there. Some big advantages of private schools include lower class sizes, access to sports and extracurricular activities. When it comes to teaching quality at private schools, I don't know for sure. It could be better than public school teachers or not.
When it comes to post secondary education such as college and university, tuition fees can be really expensive. I think tuition fees in Europe are not that high, Canada tuition fees are much higher than Europe and USA school tuition fees are kind of crazy compared to Canada. One year of tuition in the USA is like the price of a Honda Civic car.
Those who are aiming for medical school or law school will have more years of schooling. More schooling includes paying more tuition fees. It gets kind of crazy when it comes to costs. Households who may not have funds may not consider sending their child to more school. Taking on too much debt for school may not be worth it financially.
There are some good schools that exist that are close by, have good teachers and have a good reputation. The problems with these nice schools is that there may be limited spots and they are competitive. Schools can hold up to a certain number of students so limited enrollment is the only way for them. Application forms may be required for some schools. If it is something like an art school, you may have to do an audition or send a video showcasing your work and talents.
I knew of a few people that went to medical school. Very high grades is not enough for medical school. You have to have extracurricular activities on your application as well. Future doctors have to be smart and have good personalities so they can be helpful to society once they become doctors.
