No hubo pastel.
Otra vez no hubo pastel.
My birthday in May, to be completely honest, was practically a disaster.
I had imagined one thing, and reality decided to do something completely different: a blackout, rain, no birthday cake, and, in general, very little of what I had imagined would make that day special. Cuba and its unexpected twists, I guess.
So when August arrived and my friend Yessica's birthday was approaching, I decided that this time things would be different.
If I couldn't have the birthday I wanted, at least I was going to help make my friend's birthday unforgettable.
And, of course, we were going to have a lot of fun along the way.
Our first idea was to celebrate at our favorite spot, El Fajardo restaurant, so we thought about reserving a table there and having our little celebration. But they were going to have a private event that day, so we had to change our plans.
That's when I remembered something: near our house, right in the center of Holguín, there was a beautiful restaurant that, incredibly enough, I had never visited before.
Angie's Resto Bar.
It is located near the city center and Parque Martí in Holguín, Cuba. It is a Caribbean and Cuban restaurant with a rather elegant and cozy atmosphere. We had also heard good things about it. People who had been there especially praised the food, the cocktails, and, above all, the service.
But reading about a place is one thing. Experiencing it is something completely different.
From the very moment I went to make the reservation, the service was wonderful.
And there was something I really loved: the reservation was free, and the decoration was included as well.
We could even choose the color theme. We ended up choosing red and white because we wanted something cheerful, pretty, and that really felt like a celebration.
And then the big day arrived.
We walked into the restaurant and, from the very beginning, we were welcomed with a level of hospitality and professionalism that, honestly, I rarely experience.
It wasn't just that everyone was friendly. It was that feeling that they genuinely cared about making sure everything went well.
Our reserved tables were in the inner courtyard, and they looked beautiful.
Red and white everywhere, carefully arranged details, and an arch with a glowing Happy Birthday sign that we absolutely loved.
Of course, I couldn't just sit still.
I took out my camera and my favorite part began: photographing absolutely everything. The birthday girl, the tables, the little details, the restaurant, the lights...
And especially one of the things that caught my attention the most: the indoor waterfall.
With the lights reflecting on it, it looked beautiful. And for someone who enjoys photography as much as I do, it was practically an invitation to take photo after photo.
To start, we ordered some minty Rebel Lemonades.
And they were perfect.
They had that balance that can sometimes be hard to find in a drink: not too sweet and not too sour. Refreshing, with a lovely mint flavor, and perfect for a hot August night.
Between photos, laughter, and conversations, we started deciding what to have for dinner.
I ordered spicy curry shrimp.
And I'm still thinking about them.
The shrimp were delicious, but what really won me over was the sauce. It had an intense, spiced flavor, with the perfect amount of heat that I love, and a combination of flavors that, honestly, ranks among the best I've tried lately.
Yessica, her mom, and her aunt chose pork steak with vegetables.
For sides, we had congri rice, matajíbaro, salad, and, because a celebration without beer wouldn't really be our celebration, some ice-cold beers.
But beyond the food, there was something that turned that dinner into an even more special experience.
The restaurant staff made us feel like queens.
They checked on us throughout the night and were kind, attentive, and professional the entire time.
They also did something especially sweet for Yessica's little girl: they brought her several stuffed animals so she could stay entertained and happy during the celebration.
It might seem like a small thing, but those are exactly the details people remember.
Because a restaurant can have beautiful decorations and delicious food, but when the people working there also manage to make you feel genuinely welcome, the whole experience changes.
And that's exactly what happened to us.
And then came the surprise.
We thought the celebration was already complete.
We had eaten delicious food, enjoyed our lemonades, talked for hours, laughed, taken lots of pictures, and simply enjoyed the night.
But then the surprise arrived.
A cocktail with a candle on top, while everyone sang Happy Birthday to Yessica.
And the best part?
It was on the house.
There was no cake.
Once again, there was no cake.
But this time, it didn't matter.
Because we had something much better: a beautiful night, a delicious dinner, lots of photographs, conversations, laughter, and the feeling that we had achieved exactly what we wanted.
To give Yessica a special birthday.
And I think we did.
Sometimes you don't need a cake.
