[Movie] Review: Save the Last Dance

Stories that inspire and captivate—the plot is simple, without too much fuss, and delivers a message that invites reflection. That’s how I saw this movie, released in 2001, titled Passion and Dance.

This story follows the life of a young ballet student who, after the tragic loss of her mother, decides to give up her dream of becoming a dancer, moves in with her father, and enrolls in a new high school where most of the students are African American. There, she meets a boy who will show her that she can keep fighting for her dream.

This movie stars Julia Stiles and Sean Patrick Thomas, the two young lovers, each dealing with their own problems, but who, as fate would have it, decided to be together. Not everyone supported their relationship—neither their families nor their friends—and they tried to make them see their differences. But as they say, when it comes to love, skin color shouldn’t be a barrier; on the contrary, what matters is that they respect and accept each other.

The message of this film is, above all, one of reflection: despite adversity, we must never stop fighting for what we want. In Sara’s case, she and her mother dreamed of her becoming a great dancer and joining the most prestigious ballet school. But losing her mother was a very hard blow for her. It was then, after moving to a new city and a new environment, that she met this young man, a hip-hop dance enthusiast, who showed her another way to diversify her dance style—allowing her to keep practicing so she could get into the school.

As I said, it’s a story of reflection, romance, and family drama—in short, a classic that’s perfect for passing the time. As always, these stories from the past are still worth watching again.

Historias que inspiran, que atraen, la trama es sencilla, sin tanto protocolo, directa con el mensaje a reflexionar, así vi esta película, estrenada en el año 2001, denominada Pasión y Baile.

Esta historia nos narra la vida de una joven estudiante de ballet, que tras la trágica perdida de su madre, decide abandonar su sueño de ser bailarina, se muda con su padre, e ingresa a un instituto nuevo, donde la mayoría son afroamericanos, allí conoce un chico, que le demostrara que puede seguir luchando por su sueño.

Esta pelicula es protagonizada por Julia Stiles y Sean Patrick Thomas, los dos jóvenes enamorados, cada uno lidiando con sus problemas, pero que por cosas de la vida, decidieron unirse, no todos apoyaban su relacion, entre la familia de cada uno, sus amistades, querían hacerle ver su diferencias, pero como dicen por allí, para el amor, el color de piel no debe de ser un limitante, al contrario, lo importante es que se respeten y se acepten.

El mensaje de esta película, es mas que todo de reflexión, a pesar de las adversidades, no debemos dejar de luchar por lo que queremos, en el caso de Sara, ella junto con su madre soñaba ser una gran bailarina, unirse a la escuela de ballet mas prestigiosa, pero al perder a su madre, fue un golpe muy duro para ello, es allí donde este cambio de ciudad, de ambiente, conoce a este joven, amante del baile hip hop, el cual le enseña otra faceta de como puede diversificar su estilo de baile, y así, poder seguir practicando para entrar a a la escuela.

Como dije, una historia de reflexión, romance, drama, familiar, en fin, para pasar el tiempo, un clásico, como siempre, historias del pasado, que igual valen la pena, volver a ver.
