Sometimes, a completely casual conversation at home ends up turning into a debate worthy of a summit at the Hidden Leaf Village. Spontaneously, the spark flew: my partner defends tooth and nail that the worst monster Konoha ever produced was Madara Uchiha. But, in my not-so-humble opinion, the crown for terrorism goes to Orochimaru. How’s it going, community? I hope you’re all doing great and that you’ve missed me.

Let’s see—I’m not just saying this because of the number of atrocities he committed, but because of the nature of his evil and how it all came about. Here are the points from this informal debate.

1. The Track Record: Crimes on Different Scales
To set the record straight, let’s see what we’re talking about. On the one hand, Orochimaru operated from the shadows with chilling personal cruelty:
Clandestine human experimentation: He kidnapped villagers from Konoha—including 60 newborn babies—to inject them with Hashirama’s cells and play God.
Living test subjects: He used civilians and children as lab rats for his jutsu and his quest for immortality.
Direct betrayal: He murdered his own master, the Third Hokage, after orchestrating a military invasion against his own village.
Psychological manipulation: He marked Sasuke with the Cursed Seal, subjecting him to years of isolation for the sole purpose of stealing his body.

On the other hand, Madara operated on a cosmic and geopolitical scale: he unleashed world wars, massacred entire armies, stole the Tailed Beasts, and carried out the Infinite Tsukuyomi plan to enslave humanity.
At first glance, Madara seems to be the undisputed winner when it comes to mass destruction. But this is where the debate takes a complete turn.

2. The Plot Twist: What if Madara Was Just a Puppet?
This is the argument I use to defend my position at home. No one manipulated Orochimaru.
Madara believed he was the mastermind pulling the strings of destiny and ninja history. However, the series finale revealed a crushing truth: Black Zetsu had been manipulating everything from the shadows for centuries, tampering with scrolls and weaving a millennia-old lie to resurrect Kaguya. Madara was, at heart, a high-end puppet with messianic delusions.
And Orochimaru? No one planted the idea in Orochimaru’s head to kidnap babies or experiment on corpses. No one deceived him with ancient prophecies. All his evil, his contempt for life, his cynicism, and his sadism stemmed 100% from his own initiative and a mind twisted by pure malice.

Conclusion: Terror Driven by Ideology or Evil of One’s Own Accord?
Assessing the impact of figures like them is always complex, as it depends on whether we measure the damage by the scale of geopolitical destruction or by the moral depravity of individual acts.
A terrorist who destroys the world believing he is fulfilling a prophecy (manipulated by forces beyond his control) is terrifying; but a monster who commits unimaginable horrors out of pure personal and scientific ambition, without anyone pushing him to do so, leaves a sense of much purer evil.
