Today I have the pleasure of inviting you to the opening of the XXVI "Eduardo Martínez" Craft Salon at the Raúl Martínez gallery in the city of Ciego de Ávila, Cuba. It was inaugurated last Saturday, October 17, by the Cuban Association of Artisan Artists (ACAA), within the framework of Cuban Culture Day, dedicated to awarding prizes to the best creators. I hope you like the works and enjoy each one of these artistic designs.

Hoy tengo el placer de invitarlos a la apertura del XXVI Salón de Artesanía "Eduardo Martínez" en la galería Raúl Martínez de la ciudad Ciego de Ávila, Cuba. Fue inaugurada el pasado sábado 17 de octubre por el Asociación Cubana de Artesanos Artistas (ACAA), en el marco de la jornada de la cultura cubana, dedicado a otorgar premios a los mejores creadores. Espero les gusten las obras y disfruten cada uno de esto diseños artísticos.

To begin the Avilanian stroll, I should mention that I was outside my province, on excursions through Cienfuegos and taking a vacation.
Upon arriving, I found out from the friends on duty at the 'Raúl Martínez' gallery —who are always keeping up with my content— that a few days earlier the annual exhibition of the Craft Salon had been inaugurated, within the framework of Cuban Culture Day, with numerous awards and wonderful works.
Para empezar el paseo avileño, les comentaré que estaba fuera de mi provincia, en excursiones por Cienfuegos y tomando unas vacaciones.
Al llegar, me enteré por las amigas de guardia de la galería 'Raúl Martínez' —quienes siempre están pendientes de mis contenidos, que hacía unos días se había inaugurado la exposición anual del Salón Artesanal, en el marco de la jornada de la cultura cubana, con numerosos premios y maravillosas obras.
On the way to the art exhibitions, I took several photographs of my neighborhood and the streets leading to the gallery, all from a normal day with people passing by on their way to work or home, old buildings, and a spectacular blue sky.
The exhibition you will see consists of more than 30 works and will remain on display throughout the month of October as part of the cultural activities in the province, where artisans express a wide variety of techniques, as well as the quality and originality with which the pieces were created.
De camino a las exhibiciones de arte, pues realice varias tomas fotográficas de mi barrio y las calles para llegar a la galería, todas de un día normal por el paso de personas hacia los trabajos o sus hogares, edificaciones antiguas y un cielo azul espectacular.
La muestra que observarán está conformada por más de 30 obras y permanecerá expuesta todo el mes de octubre como parte de las actividades culturales en la provincia, donde los artesanos expresan infinidad de técnicas, así como la calidad u originalidad con que fueron creadas las piezas.
Upon entering, you will notice that the space is carefully organized, with works placed on white pedestals that highlight the texture and design of each artistic piece.
This exhibition emphasizes multidisciplinary teamwork, with more than 51 artisans from Ciego de Ávila: architects, engineers, among them sculptors, art specialists —in other words, from the outset it intends and unfolds the realization of sculptural projects for the conduct of the event.
Al entrar, notarán que el espacio está cuidadosamente organizado, con obras colocadas sobre pedestales blancos que resaltan la textura y diseño de cada pieza artística.
Esta exposición enfatiza el trabajo en equipo multidisciplinario, con más de 51 artistas de la artesanía avileña: arquitectos, ingenieros, entre ellos, escultores, especialistas de arte, o sea, desde entonces intenciona y despliega la concreción de proyectos escultóricos para el desempeño del evento.
It is worth highlighting the drive of the new generations of artisan artists, not only through their presence and their works, but also through the discipline and aesthetic rigor that their pieces already display, including the conceptual level of some of them, which denotes the preparation and seriousness with which they work, perhaps thinking more about the message than about the way of conveying it.
Each salon keeps a list of winners and another, more silent one, of works that deserved to be in first place. Like the following ones ('Colonization'), from the Piélagos series, is a beautiful wood carving of about seventy centimeters.
Vale destacar el empuje de las nuevas generaciones de artesanos artistas y no solo con su presencia y de sus obras, sino por la disciplina y el rigor estético que sus piezas ya presentan; incluyendo el nivel conceptual de algunos, lo que denota la preparación y la seriedad con que trabajan, quizás pensando más en el mensaje que en la forma de transmitirlo.
Cada salón guarda una lista de ganadores y otra, más silenciosa, de obras que merecían estar en la primera. Como estas a continuación 'Colonización', de la serie Piélagos, es una talla en madera bellísima de unos setenta centímetros.
The artistic craft salon exists, in essence, to protect a craft and give it a public stage. It rewards mastery of the material, living tradition, and the possibility for an artisan to be recognized in a space of their own.
The horse head sculpture, made with the papier-mâché technique, is another favorite; with the paint finish, the natural texture of the papier is concealed, thus achieving an almost museum-worthy object.

This next room exhibits the collateral awards, by a woman artist with her beautiful plant terrariums and mini-home decorations.
Sin dudas, el entorno de la artesanía condiciona una vocación, pues, resulta favorable como instrumento para el avance artesanal, superación de los jóvenes, las poblaciones en riesgo y para prevenir de los trabajos penosos y vicios a la infancia, con sentido económico, pero no desprovista de la identidad cultural.
Esta siguiente sala, exhibe los premios colaterales, de una artista mujer con sus terrarios de plantas bellas y decoraciones de mini-hogar.
In addition, there is the spectacular woodwork and exquisiteness of the technique that advocates natural preservation through a pair of furniture pieces and a scale, whose variety of finishes and textures give the work expressive richness.
Very little has been written about artistic marquetry, one of the most beautiful and centuries-old traditions of manual art, to which specialized critics have also paid scant attention, as with the rest of craft creations, despite it being in full resurgence at the hands of master carvers.

The one with the musical band instruments, with a clock and spoons, is very original.

Beauty and utility, complementing each other, star in the renewed expression of wood, fabrics, crochet, or papier-mâché, through representations of the imaginary as well as of reality.
Who wouldn't want to have one of these artistic lamps like this at the entrance of their home?
La Belleza y utilidad, complementándose entre sí, protagonizan la renovada expresión de la madera, tejidos, crochet o papier-mâché, a través de representaciones del imaginario, así como de la realidad.
¿Quién no quisiera tener una de estas lámparas artísticas así a la entrada de casa?
Sculptures, vases with ingenious figurations, the projection of a personal miniaturism, and attractive installations are the proposals that demonstrate a practice in which contemplation and the management of peace prevail, through the configuration of pleasant appearances, with good taste and excellent craftsmanship, imbued with beauty and identity.
Esculturas, Jarrones de ingeniosas figuraciones, la proyección de un personal miniaturismo y atractivas instalaciones, son las propuestas que demuestran un quehacer en el que se impone la contemplación y gestión de la paz, a través de la configuración de agradables apariencias, con buen gusto y excelente factura, impregnadas de belleza e identidad.
At this point, involving each of the ACAA members with the exhibition events existing in the province, bringing their work closer to the public, and insisting on the promotion and support of the artist are alternatives that could give us back full galleries and satisfied expectations.
