Hello, travelers of the 
This first Sunday of September, I invite you to join me as we walk down Independencia Street in Ciego de Ávila, Cuba, under the cloak of a storm. Together we'll discover its mix of architectural styles, cloudy landscapes, the wear and tear beneath the porticos, and the everyday routine of my town. I'll also show you various central spots: the boulevard, colonial buildings, and old structures, deteriorated by time.

Este primer domingo de septiembre, les invito a recorrer conmigo la calle Independencia, en Ciego de Ávila, Cuba, bajo el manto de una tempestad. Juntos descubriremos su mezcla de estilos arquitectónicos, paisajes nublados, el desgaste bajo los portales y la rutina cotidiana de mi pueblo. También les mostraré distintos lugares céntricos: el boulevard, edificios coloniales y estructuras antiguas, deterioradas por el tiempo.

Yesterday, September 6, I came up with the brilliant idea of going out for a walk through the streets of my city, specifically along Independencia Street in the historic center of Ciego de Ávila.
To make the most of the occasion, I put together a few words and took several photographs from the porticos and the boulevard, showing my hometown with a grayish face. Right now, my country is going through its worst moments economically, socially, politically, and in terms of tourism. Due to these current conditions, it's even difficult to capture nice images, because of the extreme deterioration.
Ayer, 6 de septiembre, se me ocurrió la estupenda idea de salir a caminar las calles de mi ciudad, específicamente por la calle independencia del casco histórico avileño.
Para aprovechar la ocasión, dediqué unas palabras y tomé varias fotografías desde los portales y el boulevar mostrando mi localidad con un rostro grisáceo. En estos momentos, mi país está atravesando los peores momentos en el ámbitos económico, social, político y turístico. Pues debido a estas condiciones actuales, resulta hasta difícil captar imágenes bonitas, por el deterioro extremo.
Although not many people are visible in the photos, a few scattered ones do appear: someone walking calmly, another person stopped next to a façade making pencil drawings to make a living. Many people come up to see their work, and they give them pencils, crayons, and some food.
The boulevard is no longer that bustling place it used to be, but rather a space of calm. In this stretch that I show in the following images, I highlight an ice cream parlor, or Coppelia, painted yellow, but today it wasn't open—it was its day off.
Aunque en las fotos no se ve muchas personas, sí aparecen algunas dispersas: alguien caminando tranquilamente, otra persona detenida junto a una fachada realizando dibujos a lápiz, para poder subsistir, muchos se acercan a ver sus obras, le regalan lápices, colores y algo de comida.
El boulevard ya no es ese lugar bullicioso de antes, sino un espacio de calma. En este tramo que muestro en las siguientes imágenes destaco una heladería o Coopelia de color amarillo, pero hoy no trabajaba: era su día de descanso.
The journey takes me to the iconic Hotel Rueda 1920, with its classical architecture and intense pink color, which seems to shine even under the storm, making it one of the most photogenic spots in the city.
In front of the hotel, life goes on as usual. This street concentrates a large part of the most valuable heritage buildings in the historic center of Ciego de Ávila and its main commercial arteries.
La travesía me lleva al emblemático Hotel Rueda 1920, con su arquitectura clásica y su intenso color rosado, parece brillar incluso bajo la tempestad, convirtiéndose en uno de los rincones más fotogénicos de la ciudad.
Frente al hotel, la vida continúa con naturalidad. Esta calle concentra buena parte de los inmuebles de mayor valor patrimonial del centro histórico avileño y principales arterias comerciales.
Now leaving the historic center, I venture into more urban areas. I notice the storm is approaching and there are fewer people, so I have to pick up the pace lol.
Along the road, there are plenty of modern and old houses, with pleasant architecture, a welcome sign, and green gardens, mostly with palm trees.
Ya saliendo del casco histórico, me adentro en zonas más urbanas. Noto que la tormenta se avecina y hay menos gente, así que toca apurar el paso jjjj.
A lo largo de la carretera abundan casas modernas y antiguas, con arquitecturas agradables, un cartel de bienvenida y jardines verdes, mayormente con palmeras.
Walking through my Ciego de Ávila is like flipping through an album of living memories. It's a story that, despite the years, remains in a state of very poor economic development, with worn-out colonial structures.
Going out for a walk through the neighborhood is leaving your mark on your hometown, on the stroll of the people or young folks chatting in the square until nightfall.
Andar mi Ciego de Ávila es como recorrer un álbum de recuerdos vivos. Es una historia que a pesar de los años se mantiene en desarrollo económico muy pobre, y estructuras coloniales desgastadas.
Salir a caminar el barrio es dejar huellas en tu localidad de nacimiento, en el andar de las personas o jóvenes en la plaza conversando hasta el anochecer.
The following images show a small street vendor's cart, full of vegetables, root vegetables, and tropical fruits that invite you to try them. At first glance, it may seem like an everyday, unremarkable scene, but that's precisely where its island value lies: in the simple and the authentic.
Because an urban tour shouldn't be limited to showing pretty buildings. It should also portray how the city lives: its people, their daily struggle, their love for the flag, and their pride in their culture.
Las imágenes siguientes muestran un pequeño carrito de venta callejera, repleto de vegetales, viandas y frutas tropicales que invitan a probarlos. A simple vista, puede parecer una escena cotidiana y sin importancia, pero precisamente ahí reside su valor isleño: en lo sencillo y en lo auténtico.
Porque un recorrido urbano no debería limitarse a mostrar edificios bonitos. También debe retratar cómo vive la ciudad: su gente, su lucha diaria, su amor por la bandera y el orgullo por su cultura.
This Sunday, perhaps the greatest lesson these photographs leave us is that there are cities that are best discovered by walking slowly.
Some facades show obvious deterioration, the streets have uneven surfaces and potholes, and certain spaces are overgrown with weeds or show clear signs of neglect, but the patriotic and revolutionary murals are always present.
Este domingo, quizás el mayor aprendizaje que dejan estas fotografías es que hay ciudades que se descubren mejor caminando lentamente.
Algunas fachadas presentan evidente deterioro, las calles muestran desniveles y baches, y ciertos espacios aparecen cubiertos por maleza o con claras señales de abandono, pero siempre están presentes los murales patrióticos y revolucionarios.
Returning to the heritage and heading back home as soon as possible before it starts raining, I ventured back into the boulevard, capturing the children's playground with a graffiti of Cuba's famous little cartoon character, "El Pidio Valdés."
Also, the iconic white building, the Palacio Morisco, considered a local monument and a tourist attraction for its Arabic-influenced architecture. It is currently a restaurant very well known in my city for its chef's exquisite food.
Volviendo al patrimonio y regresando a mi hogar lo antes posible o empezara a llover, pues me adentre nuevamente al boulevar, captando el parque infantil con un graffitis del muñequito famoso de Cuba 'El Pidio Valdés'.
Además del Edificio emblemático de color blanco Palacio Morisco, considerado un monumento local y una atracción turística por su arquitectura de influencia árabe. Actualmente es un restaurante muy conocido en mi ciudad por su exquisitez en los alimentos del sheff.
To conclude, this tour along the Boulevard and Independencia Street shows Ciego de Ávila exactly as it is: beautiful, everyday, sad, colorful, historic, and threatened by a storm that, far from taking away its beauty, seems to make it even more authentic.
Perhaps that's the charm of walking around here: discovering that even when the sky darkens, the city still has so much to tell, despite the few people on its streets.
Para concluir, este recorrido por el Boulevard y la calle Independencia, Ciego de Ávila aparece justamente así: hermosa, cotidiana, triste, colorida, histórica y amenazada por una tormenta que, lejos de quitarle belleza, parece hacerla todavía más auténtica.
Quizás ese sea el encanto de caminar por aquí: descubrir que incluso cuando el cielo se oscurece, la ciudad todavía tiene mucho que contar, a pesar del poco personal en sus calles.
