@aliento.
Invito a participar a @amymari,

Greetings friends of family&friends, today I join this wonderful initiative in response to the invitation made by the hivers @Valrodriguez, in addition to contributing to the noble cause proposed by
@hivedamor in conjunction with the community of
@aliento.
I have many memories of my grandparents, but only on the maternal side. I never knew my grandparents on my father's side, my grandmother Belén had already died, she left my dad an orphan when he was only 7 years old. His father, my grandfather, who by the way I never knew his name, also died, but I have less information about him because he never took care of his children, he never even gave them his last name, so I never heard him mentioned. I knew that his last name was Sanchez, however, today, I carry my grandmother Belen's last name, Rodriguez.
On the maternal side, both my grandparents were alive, of course, I lived more with my grandmother Zoraida. She meant that spoiled grandmother, who told me many stories, who took care of me and my brother while my parents worked, besides preparing my favorite dessert.
My grandmother spent more time living in the family's beach house than in her own home, where we would usually go on a Saturday or Sunday to spend the day with my parents. However, sometimes I would stay over there and spend several days with my cousins, she, happy with her grandchildren. That beach house was the meeting point for the whole family, for birthday celebrations, Easter, vacations and Christmas.
My grandmother was very loving, she was my refuge when my parents scolded me, I felt that she understood me when my parents did not because they were always busy with their jobs, stressed by their activities, besides taking care of us. They say that grandmothers are pimps, well I think my grandmother was, hehe, in the good sense of the word, I felt that the hand of my parents was hard and in her I found that unconditional love and affection that only a grandmother can give.
She cooked delicious, she was a master in the kitchen, she made me the best coconut quesillo in the world and a guava jelly that has always been my favorite. She would tell me to buy the condensed milk and she would put the rest of the ingredients to make the quesillo, and as an adult many times she pleased me with this delicious dessert.
If my grandmother Zoraida was the most spoiled in the world, the same was not true for my grandfather Simon. For as long as I can remember, he and my grandmother had already been separated for a few years. Unlike my grandmother, my grandfather was not affectionate, liked to talk about history and had a somewhat archaic way of thinking. My brother did stay at my grandfather's house and spent several days as a way of living together to learn how to do manly things as they said, like pruning weeds, repairing electrical appliances and learning some car mechanics.
I can remember that my grandfather liked to go to the market early in the morning and have breakfast there. Many times he would bring tender coconut for my mom to make him a delicious drink, cocada. Sometimes he would show up very early on weekends and wake us all up, he used to say that we had to get up early every day. There is an anecdote that I never forget, one Saturday morning he went to the house and took a sack with some vegetables, coconuts and other things that I don't remember, he left it on the sidewalk in front of the house. I was still sleeping, so he woke me up and told me to go out and get the sack, just like that, just after waking up, almost in my pajamas, without brushing my hair and, of course, without combing my hair. The bag weighed an awful lot and I had to exert a lot of strength to bring it home. The neighbors looked at me strangely, but I had no choice but to obey my grandfather, I was about 9 or 10 years old.
Each one had his own personality, a loving grandmother and a more serious grandfather, perhaps grumpy in my opinion, but I learned a lot from each one of them. Neither of them are on this earthly plane anymore, my grandfather died when I was studying the first semesters at the university and my grandmother, who attended my graduation, passed away in 2005. What a privilege to read stories that tell us that grandparents are still alive.
Regarding the question if I would have left them in a nursing home, the truth is that I would not like it, I have always seen with sadness the face of many elderly people when they name that place. It is like a punishment, it means abandonment for many, in short, they interpret it as if they wanted to get rid of them. However, I see it as care homes for those people who have no family and find support in these homes when they cannot fend for themselves. It is a difficult decision to leave grandparents in a nursing home, perhaps a force majeure such as having to work and having no one to leave them with might justify it. Even more drastic, not having enough money to pay for a caregiver, and therefore, there is no other way out but to put them in a nursing home. The point is not to neglect them, to visit them, to keep an eye on them and to give them lots of love. The latter is what they resent the most, I think it is very sad and I can't help crying when I think about it.
This has been my participation, I hope this initiative reaches many more hearts. I invite @amymari,
@ciruma and
@mcookies to participate
