Yes, Lasem is a small town at the sub-district level in Rembang regency, central Java. Lasem is know as little china because the first Chinese people landed in Lasem around the 13th Century.
Long before the Dutch colonized Java and even centuries before Cheng Ho arrived at sungai garang. Some time ago, I visited Lasem Rembang by train from Bandung station and got off at Tawang station in Semarang. From Semarang, I continued by bus to the small town of Lasem.
The small town of Lasem is a blend of Javanese, Chinese,and Dutch cultures. Lasem is a heritage city steeped in historical charm, with a diverse population that maintains strong tolerance to this day. Lasem boasts many historic Chinese buildings.
In Lasem, I visited Roemah Oei, Lasem built around 1818,it now served as a family museum and a cultural heritage site. Roemah Oei underwent revitalization in 2016. I tried to enter the yard and inside the Limasan building.
The original brown Wood material of the doors and windows was quite large and well-maintained. A photo on the wall revealed the homeowner. Roemah Oei which has been converter into a family museum, features a living room,family room and bedroom.
Antique furnishings from the past remain, including a spirit-board cupboard, a prayer table,wooden chairs and an iron bed. The historical archives also showcase the Chinese Javanese acculturation of Lasem.
The family museum management has opened a cafe in the Courtyard of the main house. With tables and chairs on the terrace. Chinese architecture in Lasem is a long standing part of Indonesian history.
The peaks of the houses and gates features distinctive Chinese ornamentation. The tip of the mountain, known as the swallow's tall, symbolizes prosperty and happiness.
