While talking about my first walk along the Bukidnon-Davao Highway—from the Entrep Community Compound up to the Marahan Vegetable Market—a teammate from the PJ Entrepreneur's Innovation Incubator (Cyberjaya) told me about a hidden waterfall nearby. It was close to the compound where I stayed for three months, and they promised to take me there on my day off.
I expected a small waterfall, just a few meters high. I am used to the waterfalls near my village in Bacnotan, La Union, which mostly flow only when it rains. Only a few of them flow all year long. But Arakan Valley had a big surprise for me.
The trip to Matigol Falls is just a 15-minute ride from the Entrep Community Compound. Because the falls are so close, the compound is a perfect place to stay. The owner offers transient rooms for travelers who want a comfortable base near the waterfall, making it a great spot to rest before or after your adventure.
From there, the real hike starts on foot. The path we took is actually the easiest one and very accessible. Compared to the famous Tangadan Falls in San Gabriel, La Union—where you either have to endure a long, hot river trek or climb up and down hundreds of steep, exhausting concrete stairs—the trail here is much more manageable. Before this trip, the only other waterfall I had actually visited in La Union was Occalong Falls in Luna, which is tiny compared to both Tangadan and the massive scale of Matigol.
The path here is clean, but it can be slippery as you walk up. Luckily, there are plenty of trees to hold onto for balance. For first-timers, watch out for the local black ants. They like to hide their nests under the dry leaves on the ground.
Once you get past the trees, the view from the cliff is amazing. Standing on the big rocks and looking out at the green valleys feels great, especially with the loud sound of rushing water all around you. Reaching the clear, green pools with the team made the whole walk worth it. It was a perfect place to cool down and enjoy nature.
