Despite warnings that our reservoirs are low, it has been raining alot in country Victoria. We spoke to people living up that way who said they couldn't recall it being so wet. Of course, one wet spell doesn't mean we are safe - El Nino threatens a dry summer, and with more population and AI data centres, we are still at risk.
For all my initial enthusiasm about AI, I am becoming very anti.
Still, seeing waterfalls is enough to make you forget all of that.
Trentham Falls is quite impressive. A short drive from the gorgeous township of Trentham, it plunges around 32 metres over ancient basalt cliffs, and it's the highest single-drop waterfall in Victoria. Standing on the lookout, we were hit with the fine mist drifting from where it gushes and landed on the rocks below.
The falls are attributed to volcanic activity that occurred millions of years ago, where lava spread across the landscape, and cooled into layers of basalt. The nearby Coliban River gradually carved its way through the rock, and created the waterfall that we - and other visitors drawn to the tumbling water - were gazing at in awe.
The rich volcanic soils have been an assett for the surrounding area, ideal for agriculture, and the beautiful forests contain the rusty signs of old timber trade. You wouldn't go short for firewood around here - and we noticed it was half the price of the coast where we live.
The walking path was thankfully short - the cold air was getting to my lungs. Unlike nearby falls (Sailors Falls on the outskirts of Daylesford is also cool) there's no path down to the base, but the lookout was good enough for us.
In town, we go to the historic bakery and wander round the galleries and shops. We found a little antique shop selling French antiques and vintage knick knacks, and bought Jamie found $20 in the gutter, hidden amongst falling leaves. Given this unexpected treasure, we bought a little metal tub for pinecones to sit by our fire at home.
If you're in Melbourne, it's worth a day trip to Trentham, or even the weekend to visit Daylesford and Castlemaine too. Grab your beanie and scarf and puffer jacket htough - it's very cold and damp.
