My wife has an uncanny ability to track any ingredient she hates, even if it is present in a given food at the microscopic level.
I tell her she is like our cat, only he has the same ability to track any ingredient he loves. He can track micro particles of fish, even in clothes that have been washed several times after a fragment of fish entered in contact with them. If fact, they know when I am bringing fish for lunch because Niñito behaves unusually impatient in the living room way before I start walking home from the place where I buy fish... ten blocks from home.
My wife has this thing against anise, for instance, which I love in some sweet bread. When I buy sweets for our snack time, she admonishes me against getting anything with anise in it. She has such a sharp sense of whatchamacallit that she has rejected bread that has no anise in it, but was sitting next to one that did.
The same thing happens with carrots. She hates it with all her guts. I mean, carrots, for Christ’s sake, a delicious and healthy vegetable. She can’t stand it in salads, soups, or in any other preparation, even if it is camouflaged. I put it to the test with these delicious cupcakes our neighbor makes. She puts raisins on top and the carrot is actually invisible.
Well, not for my wife’s sharp carrot-radar. It was pointless to try to justify my getting the cupcakes under the assumption that I did not know they had carrots in it. She also has an uncanny ability to tell when I’m lying. I guess one can’t catch a break in this world. The good thing is that I get to eat all the cupcakes.
