Having a pet is something I used to look at quite differently. I thought it was simply about having an animal around the house, feeding it, taking care of it and making sure it was safe. But after having my two dogs, Brownie and Ronny, I realised that having a pet can become a much bigger part of your life than you expect.
Brownie was my Boerboel, while Ronny was my German Shepherd. The two of them had very different personalities, and that was one of the things that made having them interesting.
Brownie was quite a character. She was a jealous dog and could be very selective when it came to food. You could not just give her anything and expect her to eat it. Sometimes she would look at what you had given her and simply walk away, as if she was telling you that she did not want it.
Ronny was completely different. She was very playful and always wanted me around her. She could be doing one playful thing or another just to get my attention. Sometimes, I would be watching Ronny playing around, while Brownie would just sit somewhere and watch her troublesome behaviour.
After watching Ronny for a while, Brownie would eventually want me to leave Ronny and concentrate on her alone. It was actually very funny being with both of them because they each had their own way of demanding my attention.
But having pets is not just about the fun and laughter. It also comes with responsibility. You have to feed them, keep their environment clean, pay attention to their health and notice when something is not right. When they become sick, you worry about them because, by then, they are already part of your daily life.
Unfortunately, I experienced the painful side of having pets when Brownie became seriously ill and eventually died. It was difficult enough losing her, but shortly afterwards, I also lost Ronny. Ronny death was sudden, and losing both dogs within such a short period was really painful.
The situation was associated with parvovirus, and we had to take precautions because of the possibility of the infection remaining in the environment. The compound was fumigated to reduce the risk of exposing another dog.
After they were gone, I realised how much their presence had become part of my everyday life. I missed Brownie jealous attitude and her funny food preferences. I missed Ronny playful nature and the way she always wanted me around.
Looking back, having Brownie and Ronny was a mixture of laughter, responsibility, companionship and eventually heartbreak. They were not perfect, but they were mine, and they gave me memories that I will always cherish.
For me, that is what having a pet is really about. You care for them, you get attached to them, you enjoy their funny habits, and before you know it, they have become part of your life.
